I hope so, seems like an expensive replacement for Gomes, especially when you look at their splits. Plus you lose some of that team leadership / intangible stuff. One of them destroys lefties more (Gomes) and they both are below average vs righties. Gomes has higher OPS either way.

So “will have an impact” equals “unlikely”? We’re talking about Billy Beane here.

For those who only watched the A’s in the postseason, Gomes was used primarily as a DH in a platoon with Seth Smith, and really only played LF when Cespedes was injured (still a platoon with Smith). In other words, he’s not part of the “crowded outfield”.

As it stands, the A’s have four starting outfielders: Cespedes in LF, Crisp and Young in CF, Reddick in RF. Young is younger and is a much better defender than Crisp. He has more power and more patience, has less speed but is still a base-stealer, and he’s more strikeout prone. If anything, I would think the Young trade might make Crisp the odd man out.

Again, this is Billy Beane. It’s foolish to look at one move and try to figure out what he’s going to do going forward. We still have five and a half months.

It was a bounce back year, he was mediocre off the bench for Washington. He can easily return back to mediocrity. Not a top free agent in anyones book thats for sure.

I loved Jonny when he was with the Rays the last time around, and I think it makes perfect sense to bring him back again now. The Rays need a guy who can hit lefties, and Jonny can certainly do that. He can fill in at DH and/or play at least a competent outfield on the day lefties are pitching and he can probably be acquired within the Rays budget.

It isn’t a sexy signing, but Jonny had a .974 OPS all told against lefthanders this year. You could do a Hell of a lot worse than that for a platoon option, especially for a team that struggled so badly against lefties like the Rays did.

I’ll miss Gomes, if he does end up getting released, but the A’s with Yoenis, Crisp, Young, Reddick and eventually Choice have a very solid outfield. Can’t wait for 2013 !

This is really too bad considering Gomes was such a great part of the 2012 club. Put Gomes in against any soft tossing lefty and chances are he’ll hit a home run. However, the A’s have a lot of outfielders and right now their focus should be on improving the infield.
