The only thing his hiring would legitimize is cheating your way up the ladder.

The first time he benches someone for lack of production, he’ll lose the clubhouse. Given his history, he doesn’t have a leg to stand on when it comes to criticizing clean players.

On some of the other stories on Giambi being a candidate for the job multiple commenters brought up the fact that he shouldn’t be a manager because he has ties to steroids. I think that is why that line was included in this story. It shows there is a precedent for a steroid guy to be in a dugout in a coaching position.

Js2000 giambi might be that guy. He’s been there for years and knows how things are done in Colorado. He may even agree with the philosophy. There are only 30 managerial jobs. There are some of them that would never consider giambi. His opportunity is very limited. He’d be willing to accept any chance, regardless of how limited, just to get his foot in the door, IMO. Heck, he may even prove to be a savant (unlikely). It’s his only real chance to ever get this type of opportunity.

He’s been there for there for 3+ seasons and had a lot of time to notice what was going on between the front office and the coaching staff. If he’s willing to deal with that and the front office wants him, make it happen. It may or may not work out, but it won’t be because either side didn’t know what they were getting into before hand. I doubt they’d be able to convince another “experienced” manager to step in given the limited say in personnel anyway.

So, does the fact that the front office is so impressed with Giambi mean that he legitimately interviewed well, or does it mean that he is agreeable to being the puppet in the dugout? If that’s truly what the front office is looking for, it is a mistake. What they should do is find a candidate that is similar philisophically, and then give him free reign to manage the on field personnel. It should probably be more of a working relationship rather than a boss-employee relationship.

I *think* the point is, while in the past a lack of managerial experience was considered a major hurdle for a candidate like Giambi, it no longer necessarily is thanks to Mike Matheny. Likewise, while in the past an admission of steroid use was considered a major hurdle for a candidate like Giambi for a coaching staff position, it no longer necessarily is thanks to Mark McGwire.

Call me naive, but I kinda admire what Giambi’s done.

He was an overgrown frat-boy who was on top of the world before his body broke down. He manned up to his steroid use…or at least manned up more than any player before him up to that point.

He’s been toiling away in near-anonymity in Colorado, working on being a good teammate.

Not saying he’d be a good manager, but his life took a very interesting turn.

Until the Rockies can get several starting pitchers who can thrive in that ballpark, it won’t matter who the manager is. As an A’s fan, it would be fun to see Giambi managing, something I certainly never envisioned.

For the Rockies, the manager has no say in personnel – they’re just in charge of the in-game decisions. Essentially the Rockies think they have a front office “manager” so the guy in the dugout won’t have as much responsibility. Here is one take on the situation.
