It's a lot like politics - the media always wants a horse race, so they push the story that is most beneficial to creating a horse race. The reason is to get the attention of the low-information person, and get them to pay attention to the network, newspaper, magazine, etc. The more eyeballs looking, the higher the ad rate.

I agree that I can't imagine Lincecum wearing different uniform, it's just not right. This is what I don't like about baseball, when you do something great you are the superstar but if you did something wrong,,, sorry,, you'll be traded,, Duuuh??? These players are Humans,, not robots that they can just programmed whatever you want them to do, they have feelings too, i know they are talking about big bucks here but these things happen. These players may have accomplished a lot in their careers at a young age but they have their downs too, which is normal and very human. I know this is not 2010, it's 2012, it's different but we have to think about what he had done in the past, that 2010 World Series title wouldn't be Giants if not for Lincecum, that NLDS champ title wouldn't be theirs if he didn't help out effectively in the bullpen. He is TIm
Lincecum, he's human, he makes mistakes, and when you're at the bottom the only way to go is to go up,, which he will be soon, he'll be back in his game, just like Barry Zito in game. 5 on the NLCS,, I still believe in "THE FREAK", so watch out.

There's NO way the Giants would trade him to the Dodgers unless they're sure that he's broken and will never get it back.

Valid point. There is one exception to the Boston media rule, though. If you want to read stuff about the Red Sox written by someone who actually isn’t nuts, go for Tim Britton of the Providence Journal. He’s great. I’m also completely biased because he’s a good friend of mine, but I promise you he’s the only level-headed, intelligent, non-inflammatory baseball writer in that godforsaken town.

I don't like to make too much of rumors like this when they're purely speculation -- there's no point in (over)reacting when nothing has been put in motion yet -- but quite apart from the fact that it would make me sad to see Tim Lincecum wearing any other uniform, this just doesn't make any sense to me.

Brian Sabean isn't really stupid enough to trade Timmy when his trade value is down, right? I mean, obviously trades happen when guys' value is down all the time -- Heath Bell just got traded yesterday. To cite another example, consider that the Yankees traded AJ Burnett to the Pirates for a proverbial bag of peanuts (my apologies to those two prospects whose names I don't remember but yeah) and ate millions of dollars just because they don't want to look at his damn face anymore and watch him dig his team into a hole most every time he pitches. In that case, the Pirates lucked out because Burnett had a much better year than anyone could have anticipated; meanwhile, the prospects the Yankees got will probably never amount to anything, but I really didn't want to look at AJ's damn face anymore either. He became so frustrating that it was probably worth eating millions of dollars just to make him go away.

But I just don't see Lincecum as being that kind of case. It would be stupid to potentially pay him millions of dollars to pitch for someone else and not even care that whatever the Giants get in return won't be worth half of what Timmy's value after a good year would be. I knew as soon as Bumgarner and Cain got big extensions that they probably couldn't keep everyone long-term and that I would have to make peace with that at some point. But I sure hope Sabean doesn't do anything impulsive when his team really doesn't have enough starting pitching depth to make this work.
