Unless the Tigers get manhandled in one of the first 3 games I see no reason to bring Verlander back on short rest. The way their starting pitching is going I think giving him “normal” rest is fine, unless a must-win situation comes up.

I would start Verlander in Games 1, 4 and 7, on three days rest. If there was any time to do that, and any pitcher you would do it with, it would be now and with Verlander.

This allows you to let Scherzer Max out in his start…he’s still not 100% with his shoulder stamina….and it allows him to be an impact reliever if you need him in game 7 for an inning.

Seriously. Why would you bump back your second best pitcher to play your best pitcher again on short rest — after playing “lesser” guys?

Fister is still better then Max, so it makes sense to have him as the number 2, Sanchez over Max on the otherhand,Im not sure of. Though Detroit simply has a rotation built for playoffs.

Wonder why he wouldn’t go with Verlander and Scherzer in games 1&2 so he could bring them back in games 5&6 if necessary. As it stands now it would be Sanchez in a deciding game 7.

Fister did have a left rib cage injury in April. That would make me a little cautious to put a bat in his hands.

This makes sense, until the Tigers fall behind. Then, its Verlander in game 4; Sherzer in game 5; Fister in game 6; and Verlander in game 7.

The difference is so marginal it’s hardly worth noting. He’s a career .091/.146/.099 hitter. It’s not like he’s Carlos Zambrano or Stephen Strasburg, both of whom are actually pretty decent with the bat–Strasburg hit .277/.333/.426 this year for a 108 wRC+ and .7 WAR.

I would have put Sanchez in game 2. He did spend a lot of the year in the NL and would be the better pitcher to have to take a couple at bats.
