Derek Lowe wants to start in 2013

New York Yankees' Derek Lowe pitches to Texas Rangers during their MLB American League baseball game in New York

Derek Lowe tells the New York Post that while he understood that the Yankees signed him to be a reliever in 2012 and that he had no problem with that, he really wants to be a starter in 2013:

“I would like to start again,” the 39-year-old Lowe said of the role he filled for the Indians this season before being released. “I knew when I came here I was going to be a reliever. My first priority is to start.”

  • Derek Lowe as a starter in 2012: 21 games, 8-10, 5.52 ERA, 119 IP, 156 hits allowed, 41 K, 45 BB, WHIP 1.689
  • Derek Lowe as a reliever in 2012: 17 games, 1-1, 3.04 ERA, 23.2 IP, 24 hits allowed, 14 K, 6 BB, WHIP 1.268

Just sayin’ you should probably keep an open mind about things, Derek.

Teams that finished last in their division such as the Red Sox need pitching.

Teams that finished second to last in their division also need pitching.

I would rather have Marcum than Lowe. Marcum has already indicated that if as expected he becomes a free agent, he would be quite willing to rejoin the Jays.

Especially when the said team hasn’t made the playoffs in, what, 20 years…

Derek doesn’t believe in relief drivers pitchers.

If he stuck to large parks with a heavy maritime air influence(basically the West coast teams) and settled for 3M or less, his sinker might survive another year in the rotation.

No matter if he is pitching shutout ball through 7, or getting shelled in the 1st, 50degrees or 100degrees, he is always a disgusting sweaty beet colored mess.
I will miss watching Lowe sweat out a bottle of vodka on the mound if he doesn’t catch on with a team.
