I understand why it’s kinda interesting, but I don’t understand why it’s important? I understand it’s appeal as a goofy wierd artifact (something to sell to fans after the game,) but not an important artifact.

Awesome, thanks everyone! Both the slow and the super slo-mo are a little bit mesmerizing to watch… I sort of felt like I was watching Roy Hobbs hit his last homerun… Not making comparisons of The Natural and this play, but the video really has a cinematic feel to it.

Off topic, I wonder if the guy who bought the bat also got the shard that flew back towards Pence’s jersey or if that got lost on the field. If not, he got screwed. $400 for most-but-not-all of a bat… what a rip-off…

I can’t believe my team the Giants did this? What could have been so important at the time to not put all focus on getting the bat to Cooperstown. I mean all they did was win a trip to the WS, come back from being down 3-1, have a pitcher on the mound who struggled against the Cards in the previous start, the final game of a 7 game series where they should have been eliminated at least 6 other times, all while the rain was dumping to end the game hoping it would not be delayed by the ump. But yeah, where is the bat? That’s all you should expect anyone on the Giants staff or team to care about. Snark!

Watch in untra slo-mo. As McBuck never tire of reminding us, there is a 500 frame/sec (I think) camera in the camera pit. On that slow motion replay you can easily see all three hits. In the GIF up on this post, you can’t because the 2nd bounce is real quick.

Card0109- from the angle in the gif, the bat obscures the third contact, which was the one ultimately supplying the strange spin to the ball. During game replays they showed the overhead angle and it clearly showed the bat striking the ball 3 separate times (in super slow mo).

Can someone point out where the third hit on the bat was? I’ve watched this GIF on replay and can still only see two knocks (the initial hit and the one after the bat shattered).

wow – pretty nasty reaction to an organization that’s gotten you to the WS twice in the last 3 years. Seems to me, at least for the Giants, they’re all about WINNING. Pence didn’t even know he hit the ball 3 times, so this phenomenon was pretty much all post-game for the players and management. All broken bats, by matter of policy, are grabbed by the bat boys and immediately sent to the game used store. So some bat boy grabs the bat and does what he is supposed to do with it, and the store clerk does the same. It was the 4th inning of game 7, not a bottom of the 9th game-winning hit. C’mon folks, try not to be so cynical.

400 measly bucks? The Giants could’ve held on to it for luck during the series. (Like that nurse in that oft running J&J commercial, I believe in science and reason, but I also believe in hedging your bets. The Baseball Gods are some capricious creatures.) If they didn’t want to keep it after that for posterity, auction it off for charity. It would get much more than $400.

News flash. They could have sold that bat for WAY more than $400, especially if the Giants end up winning the World Series. If all they cared about was cash at the bottom line they would have sold it for much much more.

If the Giants win the World Series, the bat should probably go to Cooperstown as part of their 2012 Championship season display. If they lose, then $400 is probably a pretty good price to fetch for it.
