No reason to ever send any runner home with no outs unless you know for sure he’ll score without a play. If there were 2 outs then it wouldn’t be a bad call.

Dude, are you serious, he is out of the baseline to avoid that type of collision. This is the problem with it, you are saying it’s okay to plow into the catcher regardless if he avoids the process or not. By that admission you are saying it’s alright to intentionally injure a player. There is no other reason for Prince to go across the baseline and into the catcher. Same play with Scott Cousins, he was out of the baseline to avoid contact. Look I have no problem with a catcher that is applying a leg or body block, but that’s inexcusable, and would be out of the baseline, what if runners decided to run out of the baseline to break up double plays?

They only got 2 hits. So the play was the right play. But Fielder being a fatty is where he let his team down. If he was only 275 like Pablo Sandoval. GO GIANTS!

Still say it was poor execution on Fielder’s part. Bad angle to the plate, bad slide. Should have been safe.

I am not sure of the exact percentage but I am guessing a runner at 3rd with no outs probably scores 95% of the time or higher.

Granted it’s context neutral, but from 1993-2010 the average run expectancy with a runner on 3rd and no outs is 1.433. However, if Lamont held him, it would have been 2nd and 3rd, no outs, which bumps up the RE to 2.050. Again, context neutral but still.

The % chances that a run will score, same years, and same caveat is:
3b – 85.3%
2nd and 3rd – 86.6%

So the risk versus reward for Lamont to send Fielder was very bad.

Lamont has to be 100% sure Fielder can score in that situation.

If Leyland says over agressive there I say not aggressive enough on the 7th inning dbl play. Go home to first and keep the run off the board. Conceding a run when you’ve been 2 hit is just plain dumb

According to Mr. Baseball Tim McCarver you NEVER make the first out at home plate. Which makes me like Lamont’s call. Anything that goes against Tim’s McCarverisms is fine by me.

I disagree, I don’t think he’d have been blamed at all for holding him, even if no runs had scored. Not making the first out of an inning at home plate is ancient baseball wisdom, the Tigers lineup would have taken the heat for not getting him home, not Lamont.

Take another look at the photo above — Posey is clearly *way* off the plate into the infield. If Fielder had plowed through Posey here, Fielder would have been automatically out for running out of the baseline and vilified forever for clearly intending to end the kid’s career.

The easier play for the runner here is to slide to the outside part of the plate, making it nearly impossible for the catcher to reach him with a tag.

You’re allowed to run into the catcher for a reason. It amazes me that guys like Fielder and Ryan Howard always try to slide home when they’d probably be safe 9 out of 10 times if they ran him over like they should. And trust me, if they made a habit about it, opposing catchers would DEFINATELY be hearing footsteps when they know that guy is truckin around 3rd and about to bring the boom!

Its also the right play for this reason, though I’m going to get a bunch of thumbs-down and hear a bunch of crap from those fans who think I’m suggesting something unsportsmanlike…In the case of the Giants, Posey is one of their most clutch players with a bat in his hand, especially during the postseason. If he happens to get hurt from Fielder plowing into him on a completely legal play, then so be it. Its part if the game. It happens. I’m not saying he should deliberately injure him but that’s why you take the chance of running THROUGH the catcher, not sliding around him, ESPECIALLY if you weigh 300 lbs. Advantage Detroit.

Ya but a good slide would have been safe and a faster runner would have easily been safe. The third base coach has to know whos running in that situation and should have held him.

I had the game on mute while watching, so I might have missed some analysis on it, but it looked to me like Prince //should// have been safe if he had a better slide. If his leading foot would have hit the plate instead of sliding past he would have been fine. Plus a slide to the outside would have been fine since Posey was setup so far inside (though since it is so bang-bang, I am not going to hold that one against Prince). Seemed like an OK call to me, and I am a Pirate fan, so I don’t have a whole lot of love for Lamont

He was out by inches, not feet, so it wasn’t a “horrible” call or anything. Sure you’re going to regret it if he’s out, but it’s the WS, you can’t have any regrets about leaving runs on the bags either. Besides, you have to assume that Posey might just be a little gun shy at the plate with a 300 pounder coming at him. I’m pulling for the Giants, but I liked the call.

Definitely an iffy decision, but considering how few scoring opportunities the Tigers have gotten thus far, I’m not mad at it.

And let’s not forget: that was a sick throw to home and a NICE swipe by Posey.
