This is actually a perfect idea for the Mets. Apparently the Mets ownership will not be willing to spend significant money until Bay and Santana are off the books next winter (I believe Bay’s total remaining salary including buyout is 18M, and Santana’s is something like 30.5M). In 2012, the Mets’ outfield was horrible. Why not take a chance that Cabrera’s numbers were not simply testosterone-fueled mirages? Taking flyers on questionable players is one of the few ways to improve on the cheap. Right now the outfield looks horrendous with Bay in left, nobody in center (Nieuwenhuis?) and Duda in right. Even a shadow of Cabrera from the last few years is better than any of these guys.

Melky is a reasonable gamble for a one year contract – maybe with an option. You will have to consider that he will catch hell on the road and factor in how you think he will handle that. But it’s not supposed to be a strong free agent year. Someone will take the dive.

As a Giants fan I’d be happy to re-sign Melky to the one year ‘prove-it’ deal with a second year as a team option, since although I like Blanco as a bench player I wouldn’t want to see him as the everyday left fielder and there aren’t any intriguing prospects in the farm. However- if other teams want to get involved and are going to drive up the price AT ALL, they can have him. Its too bad- I was loving me some Melky this year before all the B.S. with his suspension and the following shenanigans.
