Fans in San Francisco rioted after the game

Oct 29, 2012, 8:05 AM EDT

A police officer confronts a fan after San Francisco Giants won the MLB World Series baseball championship, in San Francisco

There was a massive open-air party at City Hall in San Francisco last night to watch Game 4.  And after Game 4 ended, it turned slightly ugly:

… small groups of onlookers went on the rampage early Monday morning, lighting a bus on fire, throwing bottles and injuring several people … Police scanners described a group of as many as 100 rioters setting fires, smashing windows, throwing bottles at police and damaging cars. By 2:30 a.m. police were reporting that the rioters had scattered, and city crews were cleaning up the burned material and broken glass from the streets so that they could be reopened in time for the morning rush hour.

Not gonna put too fine a point on it, but there were many folks I encounter on the Internet — many who count themselves Giants fans — who made jokes about how Detroit would riot if the Tigers won the series, and oh how uncivilized and awful those people are in that terrible city.

Ahem.

    *Harrumph*

    “Well, I never!”

    • cur68 - Oct 29, 2012 at 11:15 AM

      Were they on your lawn?

      • 4d3fect - Oct 29, 2012 at 8:37 PM

Of course not, but they left ever so unsightly stains on on the sidewalk hovel of my servants.

  2. seanb20124 - Oct 29, 2012 at 8:11 AM

    Bunch of Moonbats

  3. darthicarus - Oct 29, 2012 at 8:12 AM

I tried to riot after the final out but as I was still wearing my Tigers shirt I couldn’t hit anything so it was all for not.

    • captn58crunch - Oct 29, 2012 at 9:30 AM

It is spelled ‘all for naught’.

      • darthicarus - Oct 29, 2012 at 10:22 AM

I’m still in mourning after a horrid World Series performance, forgive me for not using the proper word. I’ll try harder next time.

      • sabatimus - Oct 29, 2012 at 11:15 AM

        Actually it’s spelled “Grammar Nazi”.

  4. redguy12588 - Oct 29, 2012 at 8:15 AM

Over 20 wine and cheese eating establishments were vandalized. It’s a real tragedy.

  5. jarathen - Oct 29, 2012 at 8:16 AM

I will never understand how people riot over sports. I love sports. But rioting over a win or loss is just moronic. If sports mean that much to you, you have problems.

Be like that Vancouver couple. Celebrate THAT way.

    • indaburg - Oct 29, 2012 at 8:37 AM

While I agree that’s the way to celebrate, heck, just about anything, don’t celebrate that way in the middle of a riot. While it made for an amazing pic, you could get trampled on, maced, or worse. My public service announcement for the day.

As for the SF rioters, I guess no city has a monopoly on idiots looking for an excuse to behave as such.

      • Lukehart80 - Oct 29, 2012 at 8:45 AM

The couple in Vancouver was also a staged photo shoot, not some spontaneous moment caught on film.

      • indaburg - Oct 29, 2012 at 9:29 AM

Aw, man, really? If you can’t trust a sexy riot make-out photo, what can you trust?

      • Lukehart80 - Oct 29, 2012 at 4:17 PM

I know, it’s sad. Good for them though, getting themselves some face time with the media.

      • forsch31 - Oct 29, 2012 at 4:32 PM

It wasn’t staged. This has been confirmed a hundred times over, and there’s even another photo of the event taken by somebody else with a camera phone on a roof. Go check out the Yahoo Puck Daddy blog archives if you don’t believe me. Hell, just Google it.

If I’m remembering correctly, the girl had fallen down and was freaking out. Her boyfriend was trying to keep her calm. The news photographer caught it by accident.

In fact, here’s video of the actual events before, during and after the kiss:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mtURc7mkUg

The next time you think the worst of people, watch that video.

My faith in humanity is restored.

  6. nickmiller63 - Oct 29, 2012 at 8:19 AM

So what did you think of the games, CC?

  7. skids003 - Oct 29, 2012 at 8:27 AM

Another good reason for Kalifornia to fall into the ocean.

    • Shafer's Dealer - Oct 29, 2012 at 8:39 AM

37+million should either parish or be left without a home because of 100 or so rioters?

And if they don’t parish and are forced into inner USA… are you volunteering room in your shanty?

You were rioting last night, were you?

      • jarathen - Oct 29, 2012 at 9:10 AM

I believe the word you are looking for is “perish.”

      • Shafer's Dealer - Oct 29, 2012 at 9:20 AM

I meant “perish”. That was posted before I was paid to think.

      • sabatimus - Oct 29, 2012 at 11:16 AM

I think Robert Parish might agree with you.

      • bozosforall - Oct 29, 2012 at 10:56 PM

        Parish is a Puh C

    • koufaxmitzvah - Oct 29, 2012 at 10:02 AM

What’s important is that it takes the deaths of millions of people for old Skids to be happy.

      • jimeejohnson - Oct 29, 2012 at 11:54 AM

Classy comment by a classy Dodger fan.

      • koufaxmitzvah - Oct 29, 2012 at 12:52 PM

What’s cool is that you can identify class even though you never got out of 5th grade. But, then, you went through 5th grade 8 times, so, yeah, I see your point.

      • skids003 - Oct 30, 2012 at 1:15 PM

        Stupid comeback.

  8. realgone2 - Oct 29, 2012 at 8:28 AM

Never unstaood the point of a riot when you….win?!

    • indaburg - Oct 29, 2012 at 8:41 AM

… or lose? “I’m so happy/angry I am going to destroy where I live!” That’ll show ‘em. Stupid.

      • realgone2 - Oct 29, 2012 at 9:25 AM

But it’s even more stupid when your team wins. Stupid drunks probably.

      • stex52 - Oct 29, 2012 at 10:30 AM

Not excusing them. It is really stupid. But there are more than 100 stupid people in every major city in the U.S. Hard to pin this one on SF.

      • indaburg - Oct 29, 2012 at 10:50 AM

        I agree 100%.

  9. dondada10 - Oct 29, 2012 at 8:28 AM

That photo looks like a father dressed his son up as a police officer in riot gear for Halloween.

  10. gallaghedj311 - Oct 29, 2012 at 8:35 AM

Guess Philly doesn’t have the worst fans on the country after all

    • Chip Caray's Eyebrows - Oct 29, 2012 at 9:25 AM

      No. It still does.

  11. burm61 - Oct 29, 2012 at 8:37 AM

Cleveland is the only city that I would approve of a championship riot.

  12. hlang - Oct 29, 2012 at 8:41 AM

Same 100 people who “riot” after every street fair, demonstration, parade, or block party. Has nothing to do with sports, politics, or anything other than it’s fun to get drunk. throw the empties through windows, and trash parked cars. These “riots” are always over before midnight, That’s when BART shuts down, and they have to get back to their parents’ homes in the suburbs. Also, it’s a school night.

  13. 4d3fect - Oct 29, 2012 at 8:54 AM

“Slightly ugly” sums it up rather well, Craig–perhaps you’re feeling better?

Anyway, all I could see were a few drunks hopping over itty-bitty bonfires.

    Not very sporting, old chap.

  14. unlost1 - Oct 29, 2012 at 9:05 AM

tigers fans rioted anyway after that performance.

  15. Marty - Oct 29, 2012 at 9:21 AM

We have career rioters in the Bay Area. I doubt any off these punks can spell victory.

  16. alexo0 - Oct 29, 2012 at 9:32 AM

Stay classy, San Die…I mean San Francisco.

  17. darthicarus - Oct 29, 2012 at 9:44 AM

I would like to think that had Detroit won the fans wouldn’t have rioted (though I know damn well they would have). I think if the rioters headed into Detroit proper and burned down some of the vacant homes it would’ve helped the city out so this is another way the team let the city down.

    • aiede - Oct 29, 2012 at 3:07 PM

Detroit had three NBA championships and four Stanley Cups to celebrate after the 1984 World Series stupidity, and there weren’t any riots. We got it out of our system.

  18. metalhead65 - Oct 29, 2012 at 9:54 AM

rioting after your team just won the world series? what a gay thing to do

    • sabatimus - Oct 29, 2012 at 11:19 AM

Did you poll the rioters as to their sexual preferences?

      • SOBEIT - Oct 29, 2012 at 2:07 PM

Has anyone else noticed how metalhead always brings up “gay” in his posts. Suppressing the inevitable obsession and desires.

      • metalhead65 - Oct 29, 2012 at 3:19 PM

I see the pc police are upset again about the use of a word they do not approve of. how retarded and gay is that?

      • sabatimus - Oct 29, 2012 at 4:47 PM

Nice, retarded AND gay. You must’ve had your work cut out for you last night.

  19. niubears - Oct 29, 2012 at 9:56 AM

at least they don’t riot after a loss… I’m looking at you Vancouver

  20. giantssb42champs - Oct 29, 2012 at 10:34 AM

    Stay classy San Francisco!

  21. afirst916 - Oct 29, 2012 at 10:42 AM

Small sample of fans, yet everyone likes to use that as an excuse to condemn the whole fan base. Every city seems to have done this but let’s be real, it’s not a clear representation of the entire fan base.

    Except for Vancouver.

  22. sabatimus - Oct 29, 2012 at 11:13 AM

The photo says “A police officer confronts a fan…”. Sure looks like the opposite to me.

  23. onbucky96 - Oct 29, 2012 at 11:14 AM

We don’t need no watet let the m………. burn, burn m………..burn!

  24. thraiderskin - Oct 29, 2012 at 11:23 AM

That dude in the photo looks like he is picking up his kid, dressed as a riot cop, from trick or treating

    • stlouis1baseball - Oct 29, 2012 at 2:09 PM

No shit Raider! I thought the same thing immediately upon viewing the picture.

  25. peoplesrepublic0fdabayarea - Oct 29, 2012 at 11:27 AM

Obviously these rioters were just Raiders fans celebrating their 3rd win of the season…
