The Braves want to re-sign David Ross

That’s the report from Dave O’Brien of the AJC, who says the Braves have contacted Ross’ agent in an effort to get a deal done quickly.

And they likely need to, as starting catcher Brian McCann faces a strong likelihood of not being ready for the start of the season. And given that Ross, who has been the best backup catcher in baseball for several seasons, could very likely have several offers thrown his way if he’s still on the market come Saturday.

Since originally signing with the Braves before the 2009 season, Ross has hit .269/.353/.463 with 24 homers and 94 RBI in 663 plate appearances.

He’s a good backup, but has proven in his career that he’s not a good #1 catcher. If McCann winds up being out for longer than expected, the Braves would be best off getting someone else as the primary catcher.

Ross is solid. ATL fans like him too. I hope he stays.

I hope the Braves can lock him up for another year or two. They’ve got some exciting catching prospects in the minors, but they are at least a year away from being a serviceable backup, maybe two.

This Braves fan hopes this deal gets done. We need him with B-Mac more than likely to miss time. Like the first commenter said above Ross is not the greatest when given the number one gig but he will probably split his time as they try and get Boscan some more ABs. Atlanta should be fine with those two holding McCann’s place for a bit.
