Bryce Harper is a clown, bro, this Halloween

Oct 31, 2012, 10:32 PM EST

Because there isn’t much happening in the baseball world on this Wednesday night and because HardballTalk is nothing if not festive, here’s Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper in his Halloween costume:

Props to the Harper house for giving out King Size candy bars. And those RGIII socks are a nice touch.

Used to work with a single guy in his 40s with no kids who one year decided to give out king size bars at Halloween. Didn’t have a lot of kids show up. We told him it was because everyone thought he was a pedophile.

I have no idea where I’m going with this.

    • number42is1 - Oct 31, 2012 at 11:02 PM

      you’re drunk…. aren’t you?

      • Craig Calcaterra - Oct 31, 2012 at 11:06 PM

I don’t have to answer that question.

      • number42is1 - Oct 31, 2012 at 11:07 PM

And still better punctuation and spelling that most sober folks. Props to you on that Mr. CC. Happy Halloween

If you found a house that gives out mini-bar liquor bottle “treats” to the adult chaperones, I’m gonna need that address.

      • indaburg - Nov 1, 2012 at 4:05 AM

One of my neighbors makes jello shots for the adults that’ll make your eyes burn. It’s not quite the same as mini-bar liquor bottles, but still it’s a nice treat.

      • Craig Calcaterra - Nov 1, 2012 at 6:08 AM

One of my neighbors was giving out hot cider with rum to the grownups last night. It was like living near Captain Morgan. God bless them.

      • indaburg - Nov 1, 2012 at 9:23 AM

Yummm, hot spiced cider with rum. Those are some nice neighbors.

      • historiophiliac - Nov 1, 2012 at 9:44 AM

Still not down with the rum.

      • indaburg - Nov 1, 2012 at 10:01 AM

S’ok. To each her own. Just means there’s more left for us.

      • historiophiliac - Nov 1, 2012 at 10:05 AM

Ok, dibs on the Tito’s and tequila then.

      • stlouis1baseball - Nov 1, 2012 at 11:22 AM

I had Apple Cider Moonshine last night. It was wonderful.

      • historiophiliac - Nov 1, 2012 at 12:12 PM

Why am I not surprised you drink the moonshine, Woodpecker? lol

    • bbk1000 - Nov 1, 2012 at 6:58 AM

      hahaha….very funny….I almost get a sense of Bukowski…

  2. ndnut - Oct 31, 2012 at 10:52 PM

Giving out king sizes AND not wearing pants SCREAMS pedophile. That’s a clown costume, bro, for not wearing pants.

    • historiophiliac - Oct 31, 2012 at 11:27 PM

Yeah, I always thought clowns were sad but that one crosses the line to disturbing. Not sure why a “clown” wears a bodysuit.

      /shudder

We always knew the people in our neighborhood who gave out the full size candy bars. We hit them up first thing every year before they ran out. Trick or treating has strategy also. And I’ve also been drinking.

Even a phillies fan can appreciate a great sense of humor. Two thumbs up bryce cakes

    • boteman - Nov 1, 2012 at 6:31 AM

I see no evidence that this is Bryce Harper under that getup.

  5. timb12 - Oct 31, 2012 at 11:53 PM

I’m tired of all colorful socks being RG3 socks.

    • historiophiliac - Nov 1, 2012 at 7:30 AM

I had to google RG3. I know who it is but I still don’t know anything about the socks. I’m okay with that.

    • jm91rs - Nov 1, 2012 at 10:46 AM

Except these “stay humble” adidas socks are actually RG3 endorsed socks. They’re packaged as his socks. Both of them being in Washington, makes sense.

Tonight while I was out on a run, I heard a kid say to his friend, “There’s a house on the north side giving out king sizes.”

The rumored house on the north (rich) side of town has been the elusive white whale of south side kids in my hometown for longer than I’ve been alive. I was glad to hear the kids are still hunting it.

Sadly, Bryce Harper doesn’t live here in Oak Park.

Harper gives out king size but packs a fun size

  8. wj4122 - Nov 1, 2012 at 1:04 AM

Doesn’t Halloween give you the chance to dress up as something other than yourself….right?

    • sdelmonte - Nov 1, 2012 at 5:48 AM

      Or your inner essence.

  9. redbirdfan81 - Nov 1, 2012 at 6:28 AM

I think this is a riot! He’s the kind of player that every player should be…busts his butt all the time. And to poke fun at one of his own comments earlier in the year shows a lot of intellect & humor. Finally, it may be small, but with his money, to give out full size candy bars is a nice touch. I’m a die-hard Cardinal fan, but I’d love to have him in St. Louis. He’d own the city like no one since Stan “The Man” with his style of play. Keep it up, Bryce!

  10. steelers88 - Nov 1, 2012 at 8:29 AM

    That’s a Clown Costume Bro!

    • anxovies - Nov 1, 2012 at 7:32 PM

Ah man! I was hoping I would be the first.

  11. cur68 - Nov 1, 2012 at 9:48 AM

His feet are enormous. He looks like SideShow Bob. In fact, those are some cl . . . nah.

  12. blacksables - Nov 1, 2012 at 1:47 PM

Chocalate has caffeine in it. Why is a supposedly good Mormon giving it to kids?

If he considers it bad for himself, he shouldn’t be encouraging others.

And if he does partake of caffeine, then he is really a good Mormon and the reporter who asked him the question about drinking wasn’t out of line.

Mayber Harper really is the clown.

    • anxovies - Nov 1, 2012 at 7:33 PM

      Get over it.

  13. blacksables - Nov 1, 2012 at 1:48 PM

    isn’t really

  14. slash67 - Nov 3, 2012 at 12:17 AM

I also am not sure if this is really Bryce, but to answer/comment on a few other posts, and add a few observations of my own:

    1) Body shape is fairly approximate, esp. the thighs (cross-reference with the infamous gymnast leotard hazing pics from the NY Mets train roadtrip) .

    2) Per the Rob Miech book, The Last Natural, Bryce wears a size 14 shoe, so that helps to explain the gigantic feet. I personally think it would have been funnier had he worn those golden cleats he showed off at the All-Star game with the clown costume.

    3) I thought those bodysuits were a little more “see-through” and I don’t see his wrist tattoos showing through the fabric.

    4) Someone commented about Bryce not living in the Oak Park area. Maybe I’m not that big of a Nats fan to know where the guys spend their off-season (or even where they live during the season), but I haven’t heard anything about him staying in the DC area. I assumed he returned home to Vegas to live with Mom and Dad, so is this pic from the “real” Harper home?

    5) Concerning handing out chocolates: Chocolate does not contain caffeine but a similar chemical compound called theobromine, which I do not believe is as addictive as caffeine. Therefore, this may skirt the issue of any hypocrisy.

    6) Also from what I gleaned from the Miech book, Harper and his family seem to be more progressive Mormons (if that’s such a concept) in several respects, such as not wearing the temple garments (aka “Mormon underwear” – these look like a cross between a Henley step-in and an old Union suit but minus the flap in the rear end). The book also mentions that only Mom, sister Brittany, and Bryce attend church regularly. Dad and brother Bryan apparently do not, though admittedly Ron Harper was not raised in the LDS Church but “converted” when he began dating his future wife who was born and raised LDS. Bryan also drinks beer per Miech. Bryce also seem to have no qualms about getting sprayed with it either during the division clinching celebration, And while I did not see him on camera actively drinking, I did see him handing off bottles to other players. And he did have a bottle in his hand at one point, doing some kind of swerving dance, though, again, he may have been just “holding it for someone” and it didn’t appear to be open.

I’m not calling him a hypocrite, but I believe he is not as “saintly” as he, the Nats, and Scott Boras present his public persona to be. I don’t think the vast majority of Mormons generally approve of swearing like a sailor, decorating one’s body with tattoos (not sure of any piercings), and enjoying the attentions of many female admirers either…

    7) Finally, if this is Bryce’s idea of “staying sexy,” no wonder he can’t keep a girfriend.
