this mcnulty character is an idiot!! when cabrera got suspended did he apologise to the team and the players, NO he just disapeared like a theif in the night. the team washed their hands of him. and banded together and player even better without him. proved they could win without him. they jelled at the right time. and they are the best team. look at zito he averages what 84 and verlander is at 98. and zito still smoked him with top notch defense. this is the 2nd time that giants has bested verlander the first being at the all star game. sure cabrera was there but panda bear did the most damage. panda bear right now owns verlander thats a fact.

So continues the Salem witch trials against the San Francisco Giants for having someone who got popped for steroids. This is a garbage article, by a garbage baseball writer just trying to cause a ruckus and throw s-hit against the wall to see if it sticks. What exactly did melky have to do with the giants winning the World Series? He didn’t have a single at bat in the postseason. The only real contribution he had to it was helping to win the all star game, giving the g-men HF advantage. Which in my opinion wouldn’t have mattered anyways. If I recall correctly, the giants were in a dog fight with LA on August 15 when the melk man got suspended, during the “blockbuster” trades La was putting together. This is a team sport and a team rallied through adversity to overcome and show just how important it is to play for the guy next to you. Oh by the way McNUTTY, several giants players? Out of 80 some odd players in the Mitchell report? Come on. #westcoastbias

Basically the Giants should have been disqualified since Melky contributed to more than 9 close games during the season. Or better yet they would be disqualified for post season next year just like colleges. That would force teams to police their players drug use! Turn in the trophy guys and give it to the Tigers or the Cards! That says alot coming from a Rangers fan.

You can laugh all you want and reply with wity and sophomoric quotes but even though as you have correctly pointed out they were up by only one game and increased the lead, the facts are PRIOR to that they used a player that cheated plain and simple. College teams (and yes I know this isn’t college) forfeit wins using players who gained an advantage by whatever means, not future wins.
If you’re going to put an asterisk by Mr. Bonds, then yes put one by the Giants’ WS win.

“Integrity, sportsmanship, and fairness.” Sounds more like Cricket, the game of Royalty and gentlemen in England than Rounders and American Baseball. The infield fly rule and others in Baseball reflect the rough and tumble American spirit to do anything you can get away with to win, and many of our most celebrated players in the past reflected that attitude. If baseball is indeed losing popularity, its because its alienating the lower and middle class fanbase with political correctness, who are watching Football, Basketball, and Hockey where a degree of outlawry still exists, and pretentious gentlemen rare.

Not sure how you get “helped win 20 or so games” (other than “he played in games that they won”). I mean, did he have like, 20 game-winning hits? As said above, his Wins Above Replacement was ~5, and when he was suspended, the Giants had only a 1 game lead in the division, which they expanded by 7 games, to finish with an 8 game lead. So, it seems like they did just fine without him.

And believe me, I’m no Giants apologist, I’m a Cards fan through and through who’s still shaking his head (although not too surprised) at what the Giants did to my team in the NLCS.

It’s pretty simple. The Giants had 150 games of steroid suspensions this year. Therefore they cheated. To argue WAR and stats is irrelevant since no one knows what would have happened had Melky been there or not been there. The only irrefutable fact is that the Giants players did not play by the rules. Did others do it too? Of course, but not 150 games worth. I find it so sad that people sit around and celebrate this teams’ championship and no one is talking about the 150 games. The irony of the championship team also winning the steroid suspension championship. This should be the top story for MLB right now, but instead, eyes and ears are again closed to the simple fact that it is cheating. And, like Barry and his HR crown, the Giants now celebrate a championship which should go against everything that any true baseball fan, regardless of team affiliation, stands for. Things like integrity, sportsmanship, and fairness.

At the parade today, there were a few dozen (it seemed) cheap, plastic syringes (new, with no needles) strewn around the street with “150″ written on them with a marker. At least someone has taken notice. It’s just a shame that the sports media hasn’t. And we wonder why baseball is dying. Shame on the players, teams, league, fans, and media for allowing this.

You are quick to forget that he was given a starting job with the Yankees at age 21, where he provided a league-average bat and above-average OF defense. There is no doubt he struggled at times in New York and Atlanta. But he obviously showed enough talent to be promoted so aggressively in the first place. He likely had trouble adjusting to the majors (resulting from being unpolished at time of promotion), and was finally playing up to (or slightly above) his true talent at an age where players begin to peak.

Feel free to be lazy and attribute everything to a PED, which I guess acts as some sort of magic potion.

You need to get off this stupid WAR stats!!! WAR does not really measure every stat. You have to factor in R.B.I.’s and Runs scored. WAR does not cover them stats so you cant really use WAR to determine wins that was won by Melky.

If Romney wins, he will disappoint hardline conservatives as badly as Obama disappointed the left. jm91rs, anothe problem with using WAR to penalize teams (besides the fact that I think it’s wrong to penalize a team for one player’s stupidity) is that there is no consensus on how WAR is calculated. According to Fangraphs, it’s 4.6 (http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=4022&position=OF)

You guys are all looking at Ray McNutty’s (isn’t he one of the Doctors on Grey’s Anatomy?) viewpoint the wrong way.

I mean, I’d expect for him to be consistent on his approach to this. So, the Yankees and Red Sox last few titles would have to be be vacated. 2004, of course would present quite a challenge because the Yankees (the Red Sox ALCS opponent) wouldn’t have been fit to represent the AL either, so they probably would have had to play the ALCS over again with Anaheim and Minnesota going at it. In the NL neither the Cardinals nor the Astros could have advanced. Come to think of it, the Dodgers and Braves would have had some suspected PED abuser troubles as well.

A case could probably be made for the Cardinals 2011 title to be cast aside since McGwire was involved and obviously his mere presence suggests a tainted championship.

I think what McNutty is really driving at is asking the question . . . “why do we even need the post-season?”
