The Celtics offered Ray Allen a two-year $12 million deal. He left to sign with hated Miami on a two-year $6 million deal. If Ortiz signs with the Yankees for half of what Boston offers him then he can go talk to Ray Allen.

I thought that he had asked for an endless supply of plantain mofongo at Merengue Restaurant in Blue Hill Ave in Boston. I could have the wrong source.

I agree, but Ortiz is that one link to the “glory days”, and the fans need someone to rally around.

I realize I’m being ridiculously sentimental, but the fact is he means a lot to the team and what they’ve accomplished over the past 10 years, and he IS still highly productive.

Even if they’re rebuilding (which they clearly are), give him two years and let him retire as a Red Sock.

To repeat myself:

The RS need to make a hard-eyed assessment of what their goals for 2013 are. If they think they are rebuilding, then paying that much for a DH is just ridiculous. Invest it in strengthening a couple of positions or in your minor league system.

If they think that they are competitive for a wild card spot, then offer him a qualifier. If he walks, they get compensation. They can also find a DH who will give them sufficient numbers. It’s really going to be much more about fixing the rest of the team.

$13.3 million for one year is fair. If he wants more than that, either money or years, then let him test the market and see if he can get it.

And if he thinks that Red Sox Nation is on his side and not the team’s, then he needs to talk to Ray Allen.
