I know that they don’t want this to be option A, thus they are trying to work out a deal. But taking on Marmol at 9.8M and paying all or part of the 3.5M that would have been the buyout is silly to me. If Haren has a hot April-June next year, wouldn’t he be looking for a multiyear deal in that salary range anyway? If the Angels wanted to resign him, they could negotiate or he could be a valuable trade chip at the deadline next year to fill other needs. Even this strategy would make more sense to me than to trade for Carlos frickin’ Marmol and pay the Cubs 3.5M on top. Frieri looked good to me this past season. He cracked a bit later in the season, but he struck out guys at a crazy rate.

In the 8:15PM update in the article above it states that the Angels were willing to pay all or part of the 3.5M (to the Cubs) which would have been the amount they would have to pay to cut ties and make him a free agent, correct? So that means that the Cubs would pay Haren 12M and the Angels would pay Haren 3.5M to equal his total salary, right? Carlos Marmol makes 9.8M next season. As I said this would be a terrible deal for the Angels. I would rather pay Haren every nickel of 15.5M and take the risk that he returns to being his former dominant self that have to pay 13.3M to have Carlos Marmol on “my” team.

If the trade goes through the Angels pickup Harens option of 15.5 mil and trade him to the Cubs. The cubs are then responsible for Harens salary. The Cubs send Marmol and his 9.8 mil salary to the Angels. The reason it makes sense for the Angels is because if they DON’T deal haren they will pay 3.5 mil to him to buy out his option. Then they have to sign a reliever and the going rate for a quality deliver has prove to be in the 6 million annual range (ie. Brandon league and Heath bell).

If they have to pay Marmol 9.8M plus fork over 3.5M towards Haren’s salary, that would be a total expense of 13.3M next season. To top it off, the Cubs would get Haren for only 12M next year. If Haren were to come back into form, he would be a valuable trade piece at the deadline next year…especially at that price. Who the heck would want Marmol for 13.3M? If the Angels are thinking of exercising Haren’s 15.5M option and paying 3.5M towards that, then they should be able to get something better than Marmol. Dan Haren for 12M should be enticing to a contender, in my opinion. I think the Angels could get a decent prospect or perhaps two, no? But Carlos Marmol? Uggh.

So essentially they are getting Marmol on a 1yr/$6.3 mil dollar deal. Pretty good considering Brandon League just got 3 yr/$22 and the Dbacks just got Heath Bell for essentially 2yr/$13. From the Cubs perspective they are getting a potential front line guy for $6 million more than they were paying their 8th inning guy. If Haren bounces back, he and Garza will be a formidable 1-2 punch on the North Side. Great gamble considering a last place team shouldnt be paying their 8th inning guy nearly 10 million dollars.

He’s a FA after 2013 so if he can return to the Dan Haren he has been previously in the first half he could fetch some nice mlb-ready prospects from someone with post-season hopes next July.

You could have gotten him a few days later without giving up a draft pick or even any players.

The first round pick is protected, so giving up a second isn’t going to do much. Also, this prevented other teams from getting involved, and possibly driving up the price.

I still don’t think the Cubs will get much for Haren if they try to flip him during the 2013 season….teams just don’t give up much for rentals anymore…and the few teams that will typically have thin systems for exactly that reason…making the number of rentals they can trade for small.
