Please don’t sign Cody Ross.

He had a good season on a one-year deal.

Don’t repeat past mistakes. Find players who can legitimate play on a contending team. Unless you don’t consider yourself a contender.

And if you bring back Ryan Sweeney I am just going to start punching people at random.

Smart GMs know Ross is always a risk.
He was the hero of of the 2010 postseason (NLCS MVP), but the Giants only brought him back on a one-year deal after getting him for nothing on the waiver wire from Fla. They wanted to see more before looking at a long-term deal. Then he laid an egg in 2011 and no one was sad to see him go.
At this stage of his career he is a year-to-year player. With that short porch in LF, you’d better take their offer Cody.

The Red Sox need to move away from collecting so many one dimensional players (whether they overpay or not). They need more diverse, athletic players who can play solid defense, be a threat to steal a base, bunt and help in some way other than hoping they can hit a ball over the wall.

I really liked Cody and thought he was the perfect fit for the Sox and they for him. I wonder what the hang up was. I can only assume he over priced himself. That is too bad as that would have been one less problem to have to fix.

Well, some teams have the prospects ready to step up and produce, and some don’t…the Red Sox are a “don’t”….Middlebrooks was the only guy on the team last year 27 or under who could hit.

I do think the RS are being smart by not offering too much for Ross. Ross is probably negotiating from a stance that assumes he’ll hit as well for other teams as he does for the RS, when his swing it tailor made for the short LF in Fenway. If other teams are smart, they’ll be wary of paying him much on a multi-year deal and the RS can get him for a reasonable price….and if he leaves, not really a huge loss.

The OPS thing is a problem in other ballparks, but if he’s at .921 in Fenway, then why not take a chance on him.

Unfortunately it’s using a small sample size in the worst possible way. Why quote a 252 plate appearance sample size, when we can use last year’s numbers in SF, which isn’t exactly YSIII, or his years in FL? He’s a slightly above average hitter (.766 OPS, 103 OPS+) while playing in pitcher friendly ballparks. He’s on the wrong side of 30; however, so expect some decline.

Cody Ross is such a difficult call.

I like him. I think he’s talented and he has a way of really helping a ball club down the stretch. I think he’s smart and high on intangibles. The OPS thing is a problem in other ballparks, but if he’s at .921 in Fenway, then why not take a chance on him.

Me thinks that his outspoken ways have put a bit of a hitch in the plans and this has nothing to do with his baseball talent.

Play the minor league kids. That’s what competitive teams like the Rays, Cardinals, Giants, and others do. Enough of 8 million per year contracts to guys like Cody Ross.

By not making the qualifying offer I think the Red Sox have capped themselves to a deal of 3 years/$24m. This would be just north of Willingham’s deal from last offseason. If they get into Cuddyer range (3yr/$30+m) than they would have been better off taking the chance of Ross accepting the qualifying offer
