Please fine me one article from this website stating it would a good idea to adjust the Giants wins based on WAR. Also please find me an example of a “stathead proclaiming their superiority” because again that is the exact opposite of the truth. Finally please explain to me how on one hand you can have “people who really know how to make the numbers relevant stay under the radar on purpose” and “the musings of know-it-all geek/dork/nerds”, pretty sure those groups consist of the same people. Until you can give actual examples no one cares about your BS strawman arguments.

True, but what would Colon have gotten if he had stayed clean? Colon might have had to settle for one year, regardless, given his age. But he might have gotten more in salary and less in incentives.

Of course, we can’t know exactly how much Colon and Melky left on the table because they didn’t stay clean. It’s just hard to see any team signing either without getting some discount.

There have been links to articles written with the purpose of making WAR-adujustment suggestions posted on this site already, with many posters agreeing with them. I’m fine with statistical analysis. The Giants certainly use it, just like everyone else, along with traditional scouting. What I’m constantly reacting to is how sabremetrics has become like a new toy. It cuts both ways. How many are successful with their traditional scouting? How many are choosing truly relevant stats when making personnel decisions? What exactly really are truly relevant stats? How each organization uses them is understandably kept under wraps. Player evaluation is what separates the winners from the losers. You’ll see articles like the one from last week claiming the Giants use only old-school scouting (which totally distorts the truth by leaving out that they also use statistical anaysis). But mostly, it’s statheads, proclaiming their superiority, because they’ve figured it all out by crunching numbers. Again, it seems to me that the people who really know how to make the numbers relevant stay under the radar on purpose, and all the rest of what we hear is simply the musings of know-it-all geek/dork/nerds.

Natstown- your assessment is reasonable and I agree. But what do we know? Look at Bartolo’s contract from yesterday (yes, it’s only 1 year). A raise from last year with the chance to make 3X last years earnings.

I suspect that Melky’s extra 27.8% of a playoff share will be tiny compared with his lost 2013 income. All that 2013 money he could have gotten in the market, but will not get because he’s damaged goods.

True – there’s the “he’s good, despite whatever” argument. But you know there’s also the “let’s adjust the outcome based on WAR” argument…wait…I can’t even call that an argument…it’s just too…for lack of a better word…inbred. But again, you’re right. Statheads (sorry if this term offends…wait…no I’m not…it’s meant to offend) do argue that he’s worth keeping, and that the Giants are stupid for not already resigning him. To which I say…let’s see what they think is best. Right about now, I’m in the they-can-do-no-wrong-what-the-hell-do-we-know frame of mind.

At first glance, “Professionally Outraged” would seem to be erroneous. And certainly, I bow to your superior expertise on outraged.

However, thinking on it a bit, “Professionally Outraged” could apply to some members of the sporting commentariat. Those who get attention, and have jobs, because they seem to be perpetually outraged.

This works on two levels. The guy should get paid for his contribution, even if the basement-dwelling statheads argue it’s an *enhanced* contribution. And those same folks have something to get riled up about on a slow news day. That said, I hope he’s elsewhere in 2013. Caveat emptor.

The Melk Man gets PAID. Nice for him, I guess. Oh well, one day this will be ten years ago and no one will remember it. For now, I for one am having no trouble feeling nothing but “meh” that Melky gets some dough. He didn’t break any rules getting it. He’s entitled to it just like he’s entitled to be the “batting champ”. He did have the highest BA after all and he is within the rules for getting a full share of playoff dough. Whatever.
