The only reason the “old-timers” selected those three were because they were the best available at the time. I’m not saying an experienced feel for the game should be ignored. In a perfect world, and I think in the majority of front offices, scouting and newer statistical measures are both taken into account.

I think those old-timers were on to something when they selected HR, RBI, and Batting Average to be the Triple Crown catagory. of course there are other important stats/numbers…but those 3 are important. never said it was worthless…

oh…i disagree…A LOT of people say the TC is outdated and overrated. i disagree with them but thats my opinion.

I don’t think too many people are saying that BA, RBIs, and HRs are meaningless (especially HRs), but using those three alone is ignoring a very large portion of the game. Overrated doesn’t mean worthless, it means… overrated.

Also, while people who play obviously have quite a bit more knowledge about many aspects of the game, an outsider’s opinion can still provide valuable perspective.

hey man, i agree. i shake my head in disbelief when i hear a “stat head” say for example, “oh…well…he was batting leadoff…so he does not get that much of a chance for RBI’s…etc…so with that said, RBI’s are overrated and biased”…. Ummmm? no. dont think so, pal. the manager placed him there for a reason. your earn your spot in the line-up. if you are batting 8th or 9th..hey, there is probably a good reason he is there…versus the 3-4 hitter, who is doing something right to be hitting there.

with that said, i like sabermetrics…but statheads blow it up out of proportion. funny thing about numbers is they dont lie but you can spin them any way you want. for as i’m concerned, BA, RBI’s, HR’s are still feakin important.

good for Miggy winning this award. he won the freakin’ Triple Crown, for cryin’ out loud!

what do the people who play the game know about it anyway? it’s all about the saber metrics and the guys who live and die by the geek stats they make up. the guys who can’t live without their phones or laptops 24/7. you know the guys who were picked last for their teams if at all when they were kids and have come up with this saber crap as their revenge. guys who could not tell the difference between a curveball and a changeup if their lives depended on it. yet they feel compelled to tell everyone else how to play the game and who is good at it. I will take the players and coaches view however flawed over some internet hacks who have their own website and think they know everything.

I agree. He is a great young player and fun to watch. I feel bad for him that he’s stuck in Pittsburgh, though they do have some great pitching on the way (I’m much less impressed with their position prospects, they have navy seal mental toughness….but their approach at the plate sucks…maybe they should focus on that instead of boot camp training).

I’m not going to argue that Posey wasn’t better. Thems are the facts. I’m mostly amused by awards and don’t take them too seriously. (A good rule of thumb for next week when Cabrera is named MVP over Trout–not that I agree, but really, so what.) I’m just happy for Cutch. He seems like a good guy and he had a heck of a year.

This isn’t a “most valuable” scenario, so that vacuous argument holds not water. McCutcheon was great, but Posey was better. There is really no basis for picking McCutcheon, he didn’t hit better, he didn’t play a tougher defensive position, and he didn’t play his position better.

It is, but he somewhat obviously wasn’t the best player in the NL. Posey had a higher OBP and similar slugging while playing in a park less conducive to offense, and did so while playing the toughest defensive position fairly well. McCutchen was great, but not the best this year.

Mccucthen was easily more valuable to his team than posey was to the giants. Posey did some amazing things to help his team into and trough the playoffs! But there is a reason mccucthens peers on the field picked him over posey. Mccucthen plays for the pirates……the pirates and they would not be anywhere near as good as they were if they did not have him as a player.
