Mitt Romney’s son was briefly a Dodgers executive “who was just in way over his head”

Nov 5, 2012, 10:47 AM EDT

U.S. Republican presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Governor Romney and his wife Ann wait for the start of the final U.S. presidential debate beside their son Tagg in Boca Raton, Florida Reuters

Back in 2005, when they were owned by the McCourts, the Dodgers needed a new chief marketing officer and decided to hire then-Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney’s oldest son, Tagg Romney.

Steve Dilbeck of the Los Angeles Times writes that Tagg Romney “was woefully unqualified to be a baseball team’s marketing executive” and “his one claim to previous sports marketing was at Reebok, where he was something called vice president for on-field marketing … his primary responsibility was to watch NFL and NBA games, counting how many times Reebok was mentioned or its logo caught on camera.”

Around a year later he left the job to join his father’s first presidential campaign and Dodgers sources told Dilbeck that Romney was a “very nice guy who was just in way over his head” and a “vacuous-eyed, transparent political appointment.”

Romney still has his own “executives” page on the Dodgers’ team website, the top of which looks like this:

Holy crap! Romney’s son wasn’t qualified for a baseball job? Wonder if it’s too late to change my vote. At least he wasn’t a “Community Organizer” or some other such meaningless job.

  2. mrbiz8505 - Nov 5, 2012 at 3:58 PM

Makes me want to puke thinking about how much the Dodgers paid him for that “job”

    Not “WHAT you know”
    It’s “WHO you know”

The Romney’s in the real world aren’t qualified to be dog catchers. Bane Capital was a scheme to defraud hard working Americans. The only difference between Bane and the Mafia was the end game. The Mafia burned your business to the ground and collected the insurance money, Bane systematically destroyed your business then sold the bones to China.

    • Marty - Nov 5, 2012 at 10:46 PM

Clinton referred to Romney’s reputation at Bain as “stellar”. His record of resurrecting unprofitable companies to sustainability was something line 54:2 in favor of success.

It’s discouraging to think people as ignorant as you have a say in my family’s future.

      • steveg51 - Nov 8, 2012 at 3:22 PM

Marty, Clinton was absolutely correct about Romney being stellar at making lots of money by screwing thousands of hard working Americans out of money and jobs!

    • Marty - Nov 5, 2012 at 10:49 PM

And that’s right, it’s *Bain* capital you fucking inbred retard. Do all us thinking people a favor and take a sick day tomorrow.

      • cur68 - Nov 6, 2012 at 3:47 AM

Jeez Marty, lay off the angry pills there.

      • jl9830 - Nov 6, 2012 at 3:45 PM

Marty: a good example of 2012-style Republicans. You disagree with him= you are an inbred retard who loses your voting rights. Sounds about right.

      • Marty - Nov 6, 2012 at 4:27 PM

I doubt my disdain for ignorant voters is exclusive to my ideology.

      • steveg51 - Nov 8, 2012 at 3:27 PM

Marty,I see you have as much class as your idol Ann Coulter! You may want to look in a mirror and get a good look at a true inbred.

  5. denverdude7 - Nov 5, 2012 at 7:56 PM

With Tagg’s experience at Reebok the Republican party can use him to count his father’s position flip-flops.

Then again, nobody could possibly keep up with that without a super computer.

    Church of:
I will not for Obama because
    1. 6 trillion in debt over 4 years. He said he would cut the defecit in half that would make it only 1 trillion. His math was off by 5 trillion.
    2. Only president in history to have over an 8% unemployment for 46 consecutive months. Actually it’s more like 11-12%
    3. Only president to have a net loss in jobs over a 4 year period. Cutting 4 million jobs off the total then getting those jobs back is not creating 4 million jobs. Example if I bet $100 on a game and lose. Then bet another $100 on a game the end result is even. Not I won $100.
    4. Obamacare is the largest tax increase in American history. A family earning 75k a year will be paying an additional $4600 a year in taxes.
    5. Let 4 Americans die along with an ambassador in byngjazi. Told military to stand down three times and lied about the incident.
    6. He is a Marxist radical who wsnts to redistribute the united states wealth to other counties. Example sending drilling rights to brazil to drill oil in our waters.
    7. Joe Biden. I could right a book on how much of an idiot he is
    8. Over 150 round of golf while over 30 million Americans are out of work or underemployed.
    9. The average family income has dropped almost 5k in the last 4 years
    10. 47 million on food stamps, that’s a 40% increase from when he took over.
    11. 1 in 6 families live in poverty. Which is a higher ratio then in the great depression.
    12. Used over 950 executive orders in 4 years. Every president before him used less then 100 combined.
    13. Refuses to call any attack on us citizens by Islamist an act of terror. Most under this administration are called work place incidents.
    14. Said Unemployment rate would not go above 6% if we passed 800 billion on the stimulus. Was never below 8%, I don’t count the last two months because a fictitious 800k people joined the workforce without any data supporting it.
    15. Wasted at least 50 billion of us taxpayer money on bankrupt green energy companies that donated to his campaign.
    16. Said he saved the auto industry. He saved the union pension funds. While throwing out non union pensions. Now after it went through 7 out of 10 gm cats are now being built in china. Good deal for the us taxpayer and non union labor. Still owed about 75 billion on ghat deal.

DO I NEED TO GO ON.

    • sailcat54 - Nov 6, 2012 at 2:12 AM

Do you need to go on? No, you’ve provided ample proof you are a blithering idiot.

    • chuckleberry1974 - Nov 6, 2012 at 5:25 AM

Since I’m up ridiculously early today and have the time, here goes the rebuttal to your nonsense:

      1) Do you have any idea what the “new debt” was a result of? You think it was all new spending? Couldn’t it be the maintenance of two wars and the severely declining revenues of a recession? In fact, the decline in revenues began at start of the recession — a year before Obama took office.
      2) I guess you never heard of the 1930’s. One of the dumber on your list, and that was difficult to decide.
      3) Again, see 1929 stock market crash and subsequent decade of depression. But more to the point, inheriting the worst recession since the 1930’s kinda makes the fuzzy math you employ seem even dumber. Besides, the Tea Party openly campaigned to do whatever it takes to make Obama fail. Country be damned, Obama has to fail. Show how the President “cut” jobs, please. That couldn’t have been the result of the 2007 recession, could it?
      4) Another patently false Republican talking point. There is no evidence for this anywhere. In fact, of the 15 significant tax increases since 1950, the Affordable Care Act, which amounts to a tax increase of 0.49 percent of GDP, comes in 10th. Your beloved Republican god Reagan’s 1982 tax increase actually was much larger.
      5) Ridiculous. It’s Benghazi, and you absolutely cannot back up what you said, unless you’re quoting your Soldier of Fortune magazine as a reliable source.
      6) How does one believe nonsense like this? A Marxist radical? Are you sure you even know what that means?
      7) LOL. All I have to say.
      8) He just hit 100 rounds a few months ago. At least he didn’t say anything like ‘we won’t rest until we get bin Laden, now watch me hit this drive’
      9) Not when adjusted for inflation…and depending on whose matrix you use. Besides, coming out of a recession, it is normal for income to drop. It has happened during the recovery of every recession we’ve had. Ever.
      10) Republican-heavy counties actually accounted for 70% of the growth of the SNAP program. Further, an expansion of the program also came from college students increasingly living on their own, and other smaller factors that increased access.
      11) Look dummy, this is one of the worst things you said. During 1933 while in the height of the Great Depression, over 1 in 4 people were unemployed, let alone living in poverty.
      12) Obama has not issued 900 executive orders. He has signed slightly fewer orders than President George W. Bush during this point in his first term, according to the University of California, Santa Barbara, which tracks executive orders. Obama has issued 139 executive orders as of Sept. 25. The U.C. website listed 138 orders on Sept. 25, the same day Obama signed order 139. Bush issued 160 executive orders through Sept. 20, 2004, a comparable amount of time.
      13) That’s just dumb. You have no way of backing that up.
      14) How could the unemployment rate not “go” above 6% when it was already well above 6% when he came into office? This was also after President Bush’s stimulus. Funny how the conservatives wanted a stimulus with W. but not with Obama.
      15) This myth was debunked after Romney had misrepresented it during the debates. This number is also not even close to true. Besides, the success rate with all of Obama’s green initiatives and energy is remarkable. The U.S. has become a net exporter of fuels for the first time since 1949. You know OPEC controls oil prices right?
      16) You saved your dumbest for last. He absolutely saved the auto industry, and it was a helluva lot more than backing pensions. Millions of jobs were saved and GM is profitable. Also, the GM cars in China thing is ridiculous, and you Repubs need to get with it and stop lying about it. The only GM cars built in China are for Chinese consumption, and in partnership with Chinese car companies for that market. You’re not seeing the new Malibus built there and being shipped here.

And, actually, you do need to go on…. to school or the internet and look at an opposing view for a change.

      • cur68 - Nov 6, 2012 at 11:02 AM

Its like someone showed Tagg Romney how to use a computer, eh? That list was the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen. Its like these people presume no one knows how to use a computer, much less google.

    • huffdaddyco - Nov 6, 2012 at 8:39 AM

Another fun fact for you: In regards to #1 the debt and deficit are two different things. Last fiscal year the deficit actually shrank by just over 200 billion, leaving it at (I believe) about 1.1 trillion. While not exactly the 1 trillion number the President said, it is a far cry from your sorry, uninformed claim of 6 trillion.

    • badintent - Nov 6, 2012 at 9:40 PM

You the man ! But remember, these bloggers that voted against you did not go Harvard like I did !
I’m Barrick Obama and I approved this message.

he didn’t need your vote anyway, jerk-off

    • miedwards - Nov 8, 2012 at 10:46 AM

Here are just a few “facts” you are wrong about…I don’t have time to dispute all of them.

“So as part of our effort to explain some of the discussion we’ll address this point: Mitt Romney said the deficit has doubled under President Obama. Is that right?”

      http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/DC-Decoder/Decoder-Wire/2012/1005/Presidential-debate-101-Did-Obama-really-double-the-deficit

Do you even know what the deficit is?

President Obama has only issued 139 executive orders:

      http://www.factcheck.org/2012/09/obamas-executive-orders/

The unemployment rate was already 7.8% when he took office and we were losing 800k jobs a month…it is now back to 7.9…regardless of what you think. And Bush said there were weapons of mass destruction…all politicians are wrong at some point or another…at least President Obama’s incorrect statement (Bush’s was a flat out lie) didn’t cost 3000k+ American lives and drain the Treasury with unfunded wars.

Act of terror? Did you not see his comments after the Libya attack? You are living in the same alternate reality as Romney. Check the tape.

Auto industry? Go ask all those that still have jobs your opinion…see what they say. And the auto industry includes all the down stream companies that produce parts for the automobiles. See what they say to you about over a million jobs being saved.

All your economic arguments can be summed up by the fact we have the worst recession since the great depression…and that was caused by policies put in place before the president came into office. Things will always get worse before they get better. The economy cannot be fixed in four years…especially when you have a Congress that refuses to help the economy…any economist will tell you that.

If you think the president is a Marxist you have no idea what a Marxist really is. Do you really think a Marxist would extend all tax cuts? Do you think a Marxist would cut taxes for small business 18 times? Do you think a Marxist would sign a law that adds millions to the rolls of private insurance companies? Stop reading tea Party signs and get out of the bubble.

  8. raider2124 - Nov 6, 2012 at 2:33 AM

Sailcat. An idiot is one who dies not listen to facts and namecalls when they cannot formulate an argument. Let me give you a couple more.
    1. Day he took office gas was a 1.82 today I paid 3.55
2 will go down a’s the worst president ever. Jimmy Carter actually thanks oblammer for helping him out.
    3. Food costs have risen over 12%.
    4. Fast and furious. Border agents killed by guns given to drug dealers , murderous and illegals. And not tracked. Plan was to take guns away through UN treaty. But it backfired.
    5. Tony release his college transcripts proving that he is an intellectual midget.

    • historiophiliac - Nov 6, 2012 at 7:26 AM

On this one, #5 is my favorite. It’s nonsensical yet attempts to be intellectually condescending…thus proving the old adage that the more you know, the more you know you don’t know. Apparently, raider knows little, and has no idea how little it is.

    • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Nov 6, 2012 at 9:05 AM

      1. Day he took office gas was a 1.82 today I paid 3.55

And thanks for proving to us you have no idea how markets work. Please explain to us how a President can control the markets. Or do you think it was Obama’s fault for Hurricane Sandy too?

      3. How is this Obama’s fault?

      4. This is patently false

Also, you missed the entire point of my post. You didn’t give one single reason for voting for Romney, which was the entire reason for me asking.

    • chuckleberry1974 - Nov 6, 2012 at 12:20 PM

      1) Like I stated earlier, gas prices are not influenced by the President. That’s just common sense. Markets and OPEC specifically determine gas prices. We are a net exporter of fuels. Not just gonna drill our way out of this one.
      2) Worst President ever? No other President has furthered the cause of alternative energies more, saved the auto industry, Don’t you mean W was our worst ever? Jimmy Carter may not have been the world’s greatest leader, but he was a serious victim of a worldwide energy crisis.
      3) Largest contribution to food prices going up has been fuel… which as stated several times is not the President’s fault.
      4) President Obama didn’t authorize, plan, sign off on, or have knowledge of ‘Fast and Furious’. Idiot. Gun walking, as it is known, started under Bush.
      5) I’m not sure what #5 says. President Obama went to Harvard Law, and was not a legacy student nor rich, so he got in on his own. Mental midgets do not do this.

Do you want to write more bullet point nonsense that I can debunk for you?

    • chew1985 - Nov 6, 2012 at 12:46 PM

raider2124 – you are lying to yourself if you think gas costs more now than it cost under GW Bush. Before the September 2008 crash caused by YOUR blessed political party, gas was $3.71 a gallon. Today you paid $3.55. You are paying LESS than you paid under Bush, not more.

The reason it was lower “when Obama took office” is because American investment banks, with their criminal behavior of stealing billions in wealth from American citizens, caused a drop in world oil prices between September 2008 and January 2009 due to a near world-wide economic panic.

Once the Obama recovery started, world markets simply returned to normal over time. So in reality, gas prices have DECREASED from their highs under GW Bush.

And I doubt Obama will be “worse” than GW Bush, who’s approval rating was 25% the day he left office and will languish in that “ballpark” forever.

And for the record…the American people STILL hold GW Bush more responsible than President Obama for our lagging economic and employment growth. Furthermore, they are NOT buying your BS on Fast & Furious and the Benghazi raid. The era of republican delusion of the American electorate is over.

How bout Ted Kennedy wanting “universal” healthcare but he will get the best doctors, or Democrats loving public schools but going to the best.

I’m not sure if you are agreeing with me or not. The two comments you made aren’t necessarily bad things, unless you feel universal healthcare is bad and public schools are bad. There’s a huge difference between wanting to fight a war when no one you know is directly affected by it, and wanting to help people (healthcare) or better educate people (more funding for public schools) even if you aren’t directly affected by it.

I cannot believe people who believe the liberal talking points as on this board. obummer is never to blame, he never blames his self for his poor policies. It’s always the lefts mantra to Blane someone else to distract. Pure alinsky. The reason gas prices rose under bush is becAuse there was an election in 2006 that put the cunt pelosi in power of the budget. Soaring gas prices ensued along with huge deficeits which led to the crash. Does anytime remember the community reinvestment act put forth by Jimmy Carter, which lowered standards on mortgage lending that allowed people to buy homes that they could not afford. Then it was doubled down by Clinton. Allowing no doc and Nina loans. For people that don’t know what Nina is it’s no income no asset. That is the one reSon the other is the repeal of glass steGel . It was repairs by slick willy himself. I don’t have the time to inform the stupid a’s to what that act was, but the stupid can kook it ip. The intelligent know what it was and what it did. The idiotic blame bush but I showed proof of the two acts that brought down the markets. Not one single person can show me greater proof thAt bush caused it. BecUse listening to Robert Madrid and chrissy Mathews don’t give you the facts. I just did.

  14. raider2124 - Nov 6, 2012 at 3:14 PM

Dumbass the reason the oil prices went up are the policies of the idiot. Stopping drilling in the gulf, wasting billions on green energy that doesn’t work. Go drive a car on wind and get back to me on that. The number one reason the gas prices go up is a weak dollar. A weak dollar is caused by printing money through qe1,qe2and now qe infinity. Out purchasing power is less when our dollar is worth less. Other countries we buy oil from realize this and increase oil prices. Also a collapse in a market will not cause oil prices to go down. Oil prices go down for a couple if reasons. One being a stronger dollar, next increase drilling on our own. This leads to buying less from other countries thus lowering the demand. Lowering the demand lowers prices. Increase demand increases demand. In your small mind I will make it very easy for you. Since this is a sports site. We will use ticket prices as an example. If you baseball team sells 5k tickets a game what are the ticket coats. Extremely low you can’t give them away because there are do many available. Now that same team becomes good and sells out every game. Ticket prices on the secondary market increase because demand is higher. Your team goes onto the world series game 7, ticket prices are the highest because demand is the highest. So in idiot terms. Low demand, low prices. High demand, high prices. A collapse in markets does not create lower demand. It would actually increase, thus more drilling to offset the costs. Less drilling higher demand, more drilling less demand. Get it

    • pmcenroe - Nov 6, 2012 at 3:30 PM

this has to be a joke right? You start by saying “stopping drilling in the gulf”, then you say “high demand, high prices”, then you finish with “Less drilling higher demand”. So if I’m following you’re logic correctly and they stopped drilling in the Gulf, demand would go up, and in turn gas prices would go up. Let me ask you this. Why sir do you hate America?

    • chuckleberry1974 - Nov 6, 2012 at 4:21 PM

How many times do you have to be told that countries don’t set oil prices? OPEC sets prices. Just like the oil we put on the world market is determined by OPEC. Are you stuck on your republican talking points? Or are you gonna say you’re not a republican, you’re a libertarian. Been hearing that one lately a lot, too. I bet you’re a birther who also thinks the earth is 6,000-10,000 years old, too.

  15. raider2124 - Nov 6, 2012 at 4:04 PM

Pmcenroe. You cannot be that stupid. Are you able to do simple tasks like brush your teeth and tie your shoes without help. I know you can’t. Do you walk around with a helmet. You need to protect what little brain cells you have left, not many. Get you head out of your ass a read a book and educate yourself because the school system and your parents have failed you.

Rather than get hit with the spam filter, going to respond to your last few posts, split quote style, here we go…

I cannot believe people who believe the liberal talking points as on this board. obummer is never to blame, he never blames his self for his poor policies. It’s always the lefts mantra to Blane someone else to distract. Pure alinsky.,

There are plenty of things that I hold Obama responsible for. His refusal to close down Guantanamo Bay, his continued and increased use of drone strikes, the assassination of an American citizen without due process, and his failure to punish the major banks for the ’08 crisis among them. He’s not without blame. However, his policies are still better than the other option.

The reason gas prices rose under bush is becAuse there was an election in 2006 that put the cunt pelosi in power of the budget. Soaring gas prices ensued along with huge deficeits which led to the crash.

Yeah, no. Gas prices fall under the futures market. The futures market is based strictly on speculation, what analysts feel like they can buy a future barrel of gas at. That’s it. If they think there’s going to be a shortage, they keep buying. If they feel there’s a surplus, they sell. It’s a market economy not based on the realities of what’s going on today. Wars in the Middle East also have a huge impact on the price because OPEC doesn’t like it when we bomb their countries, but Obama at least got us out of one war.

I just did.

Glass-Steagle removed the separation of Commercial Banks and Securities firms. It helped cause the crisis, but as I mentioned above, it was a combination of matters. No mortgage lending firm thought we’d have the record number of foreclosures as we did*. Read The Big Short by Michael Lewis, or read Too Big to Fail. Both talked to investors who figured the default rate would stay around it’s normal 5% because they had no fucking clue what everyone was doing. Read up about Credit Default Swaps and Collateral Debt Obligations. The analysts who were trading on these, and the rating agencies (Moodys and S&P) responsible for the analysis also didn’t have a clue. It was a giant clusterfuck that everyone shares a responsibility in.

Dumbass the reason the oil prices went up are the policies of the idiot. Stopping drilling in the gulf, wasting billions on green energy that doesn’t work. Go drive a car on wind and get back to me on that. The number one reason the gas prices go up is a weak dollar. A weak dollar is caused by printing money through qe1,qe2and now qe infinity….next increase drilling on our own….

Again, no, that’s not how oil markets work. Also, even if Obama/next President opened up ANWAR next Monday, we wouldn’t see a net gain for 10 years at least. First we have to build the facilities to get at the oil. Then we have to build additional refineries to refine the oil. If anyone tells you that ANWAR drilling will lead to an almost instant reduction in oil prices is living in a fantasy land.

This leads to buying less from other countries thus lowering the demand.

Wait what? If demand for a product is X, the demand is X. Whether we make it ourselves or buy it from someone else has no effect on how much X is.

I dunno COPO. I was kind of hypnotized by his “logic”. His “eloquence”. You pointing out his varied inaccuracies, misunderstandings and what is probably willful ignorance kind of ruins the spell. I did like your point about ANWAR though. My brother owns a company that does oil rig and refinery set up: he does the electricals and instrument tech stuff and he works a lot up north. He’d make a fortune out of drilling in ANWAR. Wouldn’t have to wait 10 years for it neither.

Right, so you’re saying that we withdraw completely from the world oil markets and get by on our own supply? What kind of wrench do you think that would throw into a recovering world economy? What kind of message does that isolationism send to the world? It would tell the world that we don’t give a damn. The world’s economy runs through New York City. We would only hurt ourselves with nonsense like what you’re suggesting. I know I shouldn’t take too seriously the stuff you’re saying, but even morons get to have their say in America.
