Robertson wasn’t removed from the job. He got hurt his first or second appearance after being named the interim closer. By the time he came off the DL, Soriano had taken the job and run away with it.

Hey Scott, guess what , the Yankees don’t need Soriano, if Mo isn’t his old self, Robertson will take over. The reason Robertson failed last year was he was coming back from an injury and was rusty, Joe panicked and gave the role to Soriano, but Robertson can close, you can believe that.

The Yankees have Aardsma in the pen and can look at other options before over-paying for Soriano (I like the guy, he thrived in NYY but it willl be an over-pay none the less).

Madsen, Soria and others can be had for far less & might be just as good an option when factoring the luxury tax issue.

The important thing to remember it isn’t about getting under AND staying under the cap. It’s a matter of getting under it to reset the rate they are taxed.

Simply doing that saves them tens of millions per year moving forward.

Rather than cutting checks that other teams get to cash they can then issue those checks to other players that can help the cause.

sure, the Yankees can take him. how about three years and 15$MM? After all, no other team will raise Soriano’s profile quite like the Yankees.

though they do have Rivera, Robertson, Chamberlain and Aardsma all with closer experience and/or expectation. if they want another proven closer, Madson, Sofia, Myers and Matt Capps are all out there cheaper than Soriano.

HINT: there is some sarcasm hidden in this post.

Why not, in the non-Rivera group of closers, I’d rather take Soria on a shorter term deal than Soriano any day of the week. He’s cheaper, younger and a better pitcher. The Joba comment isn’t even worth replying to.

Probably because they said they would go closer by commitee with Rondon getting a shot. Plus, they didn’t have a first round pick last year, and probably would like to keep the one they have this year (plus the extra one they have from the trade with the Marlins).

Look for the Tigers to target Madden if they sign a closer this offseason.
