Brewers general manager Doug Melvin admitted yesterday that he recently chatted on the phone with Zack Greinke, leading to speculation that the free agent returning to Milwaukee might be possible.

Melvin stressed that he simply likes talking baseball with Greinke–which is something he’s said in the past as well–and added that the right-hander “didn’t tip his hand” in terms of a potential landing spot.

As for the rumors, Adam McCalvy of writes that they’re much like the previous rumors linking the Brewers to Josh Hamilton, calling them both “a long shot.”

Melvin himself downplayed the chances of signing Hamilton and McCalvy notes that the Brewers “are in the process of paring payroll after pushing over $100 million last season for the first time in club history.”

Clubhouse Confidential put Greinke in the shredder and essentially it told me nothing/everything we already knew about him.

You sign him, you’re getting a guy that has PROBABLY already had his career year and more than likely a guy that will pitch somewhere between that and a less than average AL starter.

For most of the hungrier GMs in the league, it’s worth $20 million/year. If it’s me and I haven’t won in 105 years, I might take a flyer on this guy, but for most other teams, pay him $14 mil/year and give him 5 years. That’s it.

Not surprising, since Melvin said Greinke is “like a son to me” after they dealt him to the Angels. They also had him evaluate video of potential pitching prospects and was in the war room during the draft.

Melvin downplayed Aramis Ramirez last year too…
