Cano is only able to drive in more runs because he had hitters like Jeter in front of him. Jeter led the Yankees for the first couple months of the season when Cano was non existent. He hit .268 this season with risp while Jeter hit .310. If it wasn’t for the last 9 games of the season, Cano would’ve hit .293 with 30 hr and 80 rbis while Jeter would’ve hit .322 with 15 hr and 57 rbis. Without Jeter’s lead the first half of the season, the Yankees don’t make the playoffs.

What is more, Cano actually was more effective than Jeter in hitting leadoff. Cano has a .376/.407/.632 line leading off an inning. Jeter only has a .351/.379/.464 line. Cano would have easily made a better lead-off hitter than Jeter. He is just so much more valuable as clean-up hitter.

Add that to the fact that Cano hits more homeruns, drives in more runs, gets on base more, and plays much, much better defense, and it isn’t even close who the best Yankee infielder is.

I think it is fair to say that Yadi was more important to the Cardinals in 2011 than Pujols was…and that he was the better FA signing because he is younger, plays a position that is tougher to replace, signed for fewer years, and for 30% of the total dollars. Yadi made it look really smart by hitting better than Pujols last year….it’ll be more clear every year going forward that the Cardinals decision not to sign Pujols was a very good one….and that they are lucky that the Angels made him that offer…because even the offer they did make would have been bad for the team long term.
