Ellsbury to Nationals for Michael Morse and an SP prospect (Meyer, Giolito, Purke).

Both Morse and Ellsbury are FAs after the '13 season. Morse will make $6.75m this season and Ellsbury should be between $8-9m. Nationals have been on the look for a premier CF for a couple years now and seem to have as good of a relationship with Boras as any MLB team which, in theory, helps with Ellsbury contract. The Nats have Strasburg, Gio and Zimmermann locked up for the near future making one of those high-end arms expendable.

The Nats may take Meyer off the table. A trade involving Giolito could not happen until January 13th (Giolito signed this past July 13th and cannot be traded for a full year after that. A PTBNL trade must be completed within 6 months).

Time to trade Jacoby and get what you can. If he has a big year Boras will want more than he will be worth. If he doesn't have a big year why keep him.
The fact of the matter is this: Pink Hats think Jacoby is "wicked sexy". So, Lucchino keeps him around. He knows the gate next year won't be much of a draw with the team they are currently going to put on the field. Ortiz will help and that damn (fake) sellout streak has to keep going.

This one is for you Pink Hats of New England.

Seems like the Red Sox are between a rock and a hard place when it comes to Ellsbury. If he has a good 2013 it's probably unlikely they will be able to re-sign him with Boras as his agent and the money and years he will be looking for. If they trade him at the 2013 trade deadline the fact that whichever teams might be interested in him won't get a draft pick if he walks on them at the end of the 2013 season could limit what they might give the Sox in exchange. On the surface it would appear the best option for the Red Sox is to trade him this winter and at least get a couple of decent prospects for him now. It's probably pretty unlikely that the Red Sox will make the postseason in 2013 so why not get what they can now.
