Now is the time to lay the groundwork for an off-season’s worth of pointless, but enjoyable, trade speculation. Assessing “interest,” identifying “mystery teams,” floating absurd proposals (ex., Bryce Harper to the Yankees for a couple of Low-A kids and a broken fungo bat). Stuff like that.

I agree with dodger88 that Friday’s deadline does change the timeline for free agent signings. Certainly, some agents will be present for private conversations. Obviously, preliminary trade negotiations will begin this week as teams will privately (they hope) indicate whom they might trade. Tampa Bay’s starting pitchers will be a popular topic.

I’d make a joke about a baseball rave, but the thought of Selig on ecstasy is sooooo disturbing and gross.

I expect DD will play it close to the vest as always, and I don’t expect him to make any early moves. If he proves me wrong, though, it will make waiting for spring all the more painful.

We might see a bit more action this year as in the past offers of arbitration were still weeks away. This year teams had to make qualifying offers and they must be accepted or turned down by Friday, thus teams will know by week’s end whether a free agent signing will cost them a draft pick next June. I still think more will happen next month at the winter meetings but an agressive team or two may try to make something happen sooner rather than later.
