Walt Weiss does it again!

Despite other more prominent (perceived to be better) candidates - Weiss wins the Rockies job.

In one of the weakest Rookie classes in MLB history in 1988, Weiss rode the A's youth wave to being name arguably the weakest 'Rookie of the Year' selection in history. He was above average defensively but a miserable offensive player, and somehow beat out Bryan Harvey and Melido Perez . . . even Jody Reed was better.

Fast forward to 2012 and Weiss is riding the wave of youthful inexperienced former players becoming Managers and gotten himself a big league gig he probably wouldn't have gotten if this was 5 years ago.

Yeah. This is a team that most guys wouldn't want to manage....essentially, the Manager gets to make very few decisions, doing only a small portion of the job, and then takes the blame when things don't work out.

The problem is that experience still doesn't make you the best candidate for the job. Every team has their own list of qualities they are looking for...and more and more, leadership and an approach/philosophy consistent with that used by the organization are the most important ones teams are looking for....it wouldn't matter if John McGraw interviewed for a job if his approach to managing the staff wasn't what a team was looking for, he still wouldn't get the job the way organizations work now.

Sandberg has had what....2 interviews? one with the Cubs 2 years ago and one with the Cardinals last year. Most teams have had no interest in talking to him...for whatever reason, the baseball community isn't that big, teams may have heard something they didn't like or they may just think that he's set on being the Phillies Manager starting in 2014 since he was just promoted to the big club.

The structure of the management of this team is very radical...so that makes this hire look even less radical. I believe that someone in the front office actually decides the lineup each day and the manager is only there for in-game decisions.

I have no issues with the hire, its just funny that a guy who's last coaching job was high school beat out guys who were actually working for major league teams. At least it was Varsity and not the JV team.

Wow. From high school coach in the summer to managing an mlb team the next year. It wasn't so long ago that ex-players had to start all over if they wanted to coach and toil in the low minors for years before even sniffing a chance to get back to the majors as a coach. It's funny how a trend begins and it just becomes a wave that every other team hops on. Old school guys like Ryne Sandberg must be asking "what the f***?".
