Re: Erik Bedard

If i remember correctly (and no, i dont have the numbers), bedard was actually a real solid option for the buccos early on. It seemed like once latejune/july hit, he fell off a cliff and that 5.01 era didnt do his last 2 months starting any justice. He was TERRIBLE. I dont know if there was anything to it besides perhaps fatigue, but it sucked.

Shi Davidi of Rogers Sportsnet reports that the Jays are closing in on a middle infielder with major league experience. If it is a free agent, the names to look at are Izturis, Keppinger and Drew.

The two Blue Jay relief pitchers on the above list (Frasor and Lyon) would help several teams. Expect that they will get good contracts. Frasor is from Chicago and might be a fit with the Cubs. Having his mother as a baby sitter actually appeals to him. The Jays appear to be going with a bullpen that features younger, cheaper pitchers who will be under team control for several years.

When we talk free agents, this is the range I see the Astros trolling in. I wouldn't want them signing any big ones, and I understand their model for rebuilding. But if you want to draw fans you have to offer the possibility of a competitive game. Pick up a few guys here who have a year or two left. You won't block young player development, you won't pay very much, and you may offer a better product on the field next year.
