What makes anyone think the Mets will do any better a job of evaluating the “prospects” they’d get for one of their few MLB-level players than the dreadful job they’ve done for the last decade?

If you don’t have many trading chips, you must bet them wisely, and few can claim the Mets have any track record of betting wisely.

I’m a diehard Mets fan & I want them to trade him. He’s a great story & just like many other Mets fans I love the guy & would love for him to spend the rest of his career, but right now that isn’t plausible. The Mets are running their franchise like a small market club & they need to acquire talent through trades because they’re not willing to spend money on the free agent market. I knew going into this offseason that they wouldn’t be able to sign both Dickey & Wright to long term extensions & Wright should be their main priority due to his age, marketability & potential. Dickey was great this year & should win the Cy Young this year, but the Mets aren’t going to be very good next year & what is the sense of allocating a lot of money to an aging pitcher on a team at least 2 years away from contending? I say they keep Wright, and trade Dickey for a young, power-hitting OF. They’re not going to get Upton for a 37 year old knuckleballer, but they could very well get Alex Gordon for him & if that trade is offered, I’d pull the trigger in a second.

R.A. Dickey is a great story, and a great performer. The Mets are not going to contend in the next couple of years, and there is a new generation (Harvey, Wheeler, Niese, Gee, etc.) being groomed as starters. The right move is to move him now, while his contract is relatively cheap, for some much needed outfield help and perhaps some young arms. And I hope he wins 20 again.

They should flip Wright and get what they can for him. now he would bring back a package you can build around. Let’s be realistic, this is a 4-5 year rebuild in NY. By that point, Wright is well past his prime. They should move him now, the price would be a premium

As a phillies fan, please trade him. Not only does he own the Phils (like all knuckle ballers), but he screws up their swings for a week or more, so an already anemic offense is flat out terrible

Sign him! He is too old to garner prospects at this point, but contending teams would be willing to trade prospects to secure a pennant. I would do a sign and see if the Mets compete, and trade if they can’t.

Wakefiled indeed did throw a knuckleball well past 38, but he sure as shit didn’t do it all that well in posting an ERA in the high fours.

I don’t care how good a year dude had last year, two years top. Anything else is just stupid.

No, they do not want to trade Wright. They will only trade him if he doesn’t want to stay with the Mets. They will know if that’s the case depending on how high his price is. But they will come up with a very fair and generous market offer and Wright will likely stay.

He throws his knuckle much harder than Wakefield and most other knuckleballers. So that is not a good comparison. Dickey usually peters out at about 105 pitches too. There is a widespread belief that he won’t age as well as other knuckleballers, and it’s a valid concern.

Having said that, I would offer him 3 years at around 13 million per year with a mutual option year. If he’s asking for a lot more, then you trade him.

And I think Dickey deserves the CY. I believe he will win it.

Metsblog is indicating that “insiders” are saying he’s looking for 4 years on top of his extension (a total of 5 years, that is) and while he may be a knuckleballer, it’s hard to give 5 years to a 38 year old who has only had two seasons of 200+ innings in his career. He was awesome this season, but it’s not like he’s got a track record of excellence you can look back on.

He’s 38, but getting a renewed feel for that faster knuckleball he throws. It has led to a better K/BB rate than what we’ve often seen out of other knuckleball pitchers. And with no UCL in that right arm of his, no chance he’ll be a Tommy John surgery casualty. Sign him, unless somebody is willing to back up the prospect truck and/or overpay for him.

I agree with you that looking for trades for both is the right thing to do. But the same information you have about the Mets’ competitive position is available to all of these other GM’s. I wouldn’t expect to hit the jackpot with prospects.

Maybe at the trade deadline if someone needs exactly that player. Otherwise the other GM’s will bargain hard.

What a shock!!! The thing is that this makes perfect sense with him and Wright. Does anyone really think that the Mets management doesn’t want to get loads of prospects for these two guys? You could get 4 blue chippers for these guys, maybe more. I know it’s part not wanting to totally alienate the fan base but do Mets fans prefer to watch a middling .500 team go through the motions with a couple stars who will likely never be a part of the team when they finally get back to serious contention or do they want to get some top prospects and watch all the young players they would have grow into a real team in 2 or 3 years? It would be different if the Wilpons had been making it known that they are going to spend again, but if not, will the Mets really be able to compete with the Nats, Braves, and Phillies during whats left of Wright’s peak years? If not then why not get a kings ransom for him now?

There are only so many clubs that have the payroll to give a substantial contract to a 38 year old pitcher. The Mets are not one of those teams that enjoy that luxury.

They are doing the wise thing by shopping him, they should be able to get a solid return.

Makes plenty of sense for them to move him – my asking price would be a MLB ready OF and another hitting prospect. The Mets have done a nice job with their pitching recently.
