No player heading into free agency has accepted a qualifying contract from their 2012 team. These qualifying offers are averaging over $13 million. Chances are, based on this bit of info, if Beckett and Crawford were heading to the market, they would be getting bids that come in around or eclipse $13 million.

Consider that James Loney made over $7 million last year in a contract he got via arbitration-- i.e. decided by an arbiter who is using market trends to decide a final number. Baseball salaries are not like our salaries. With the absurd valuation of sports franchises like the Dodgers ($2.4 billion) and the Browns ($900 million for controlling share) the suggestion is to stop making assumptions about what folks are really worth in the open market.

Mind you the Diamonbacks had a mid 70's million payroll and underachieved yes key injuries yes, and should bounce back this year with the addition of some key areas. Addition by subtraction also helping them. The Dodgers did clean up a big salary mess for Boston and Gonzales the only one who will earn his money maybe. Scott B. does turn me off whenever I here he is a players agent cause he always try to kill the clubs in free agency. Dodgers Yankees Angles, all out spending others by far = ?? Only one of those teams even made the playoffs.

Yep, it is what has dominated the last decade. Not just money, but the smart use of it...in general, you've got to have it, but you've got to use it smartly. Otherwise, you just build for a 3 year window and hope to get lucky (like the Rays did and like the A's are doing).

That's it, Paper. Who can spend all those buckets of money intelligently?
The Dodgers moves in 2012 baffled me. Despite acquiring Adrian Gonzalez, was taking on a quarter billion dollars in salary for those players a smart risk? It had the feel of money burning a hole in a team's pocket and it served as a massive bailout of the Red Sox. Counting on Carl Crawford's production to match his salary is not a risk I would not have taken.

I don't like assuming another team's mistake(s). See (Wells, Vernon). If Crawford and Beckett were on the open market today, neither one would get close to what their current contracts owe them. One could argue that the net loser in the Red Sox - Dodgers deal was the Yankees. When a division rival gets relieved of a quarter billion in regrettable contracts, it functions as a badly needed push of the reset button.

I also would have let Ethier walk. He had a disporportionate amount of AB's among lefties last year because his futility against them basically assures the fact that opposing managers will save a situational lefty to face Ethier in crucial late game AB's.

As for Boras, he knows what clubs will be spending money in the near future. It's his job to know. It's Coletti's job to not get snookered again like he did last August.

I don't begrudge the Dodgers at all for spending money....I'm all for teams spending more money on players....the players are the spectacle we all pay to see, root for, and have fond memories of....they are baseball and the talent on which 100% of baseball revenue is generated....so the larger proportion of my money that goes to the players pockets instead of the owners...the better.

However....I don't see any reason to think that the Dodgers are going to spend money wisely. The way over spent on a solid but not great reliever. They gave up great prospects and took on all but $12 of the Beckett/Gonzalez/Crawford contracts....and the only one with any chance whatsoever of not being a horrible deal is the Gonzalez one....the best that can happen there is that he's worth the money. They also picked up a quickly declining Hanley Ramirez whose defense has always been horrible and is getting worse....he'll be paid $31.5M over the next 2 years. The Eithier contract is an overpay, and Kemp is being paid a hefty sum as well (though he may actually be worth it if he can stay healthy). That is a lot of money for players that don't represent much above league average in terms of production.

Capping things off, they kept Ned Colletti...who seems to have no idea what he's doing after riding (and trading away) the quality farm system built by the previous GM.

I know this is hard to understand outside the echo chamber, because really it's so cool to be inside that echo chamber where things all go the way they're supposed to go, and you're, like, on top of everything and so high and mighty and warm and comfy, but can we get real about the Dodgers activity last year? They did not spend $200 million in a failed attempt to win the NL West. The Dodgers restructured their team by picking up other teams' shitty contracts in order to make a run in 2012 and in order to put together a winner for 2013. Obviously the run didn't come, but that lack of arun didn't cost them $200 million.

You want to get on the Dodgers? Do it for 2013. Knock yourselves out. But don't evaluate a "failure" in 2012 (last team knocked out of the playoff race even though that's nothing special because the playoffs no consist of 14 teams) with the amount to be spent in 2013.
