How did Cano give the Yankees a home-town discount? He signed a contract to avoid arbitration, not free-agency. There was no other team that Cano could have even negotiated with at the time. The Yankees bought out his 1st 2 years of FA (2012/2013) for $29 million as part of the agreement to give him 4 years of guaranteed salary when he was 25. He rewarded the Yankees with a .271/.305/.410 season in 2008. Anyway, it’s tiring watching these guys beg for the security of a long-term deal when a team doesn’t have to give it to them, then complain 3-4 years later when they don’t think their annual salary is high enough.

Who does this little punk think he is? See, this is why I just cannot stand this cocky little brat (he should play for the Jets). Pretty much been handed everything and now he wants hundreds of millions of dollars (let’s be reasonable, you know he’s gonna want Prince/Albert dough), for the most part tanking in the playoffs this season. He’s been starting to phone in routine plays and he just has this arrogance about him that is just not likable. Maybe he ought to stroll down the streets of Jersey and New York this weekend to gain some humbleness instead acting like the overprivileged daddy’s boy that he is. Note to “Robbie”, we all know he hates that, you’re expendable.

Oh I can perfectly understand why a player would want to stay with a team. I get ties to the team that brought you up, and a city growing on you. I just don’t understand calling it a hometown discount. Especially with the Cole Hamels business a year or two ago, everyone asked if he was going to give the Phillies a “hometown discount” when he’s from San Diego.

If you play a sport on a team for a long time, love playing there, they win, why would you want to leave? Its become your hometown, especially if you have kids. Moving is so annoying for baseball players many of their families dont move when a player is traded or signs elsewhere. So to not go through that, and stay comfortable many players who wish to remain with a club take a pay cut. However most of the time its to a team that couldn’t afford a max contract. The Yankees are definately NOT one of those teams.

Because players who have MVP-caliber seasons when they’re twenty-one get ten-year, quarter-billion dollar contracts when they’re twenty-seven. If Trout offered to let the Angels buy out five of his FA years right now at that cost, they would absolutely do it in a heartbeat. Even figuring he breaks Ryan Howard’s arbitration buyouts, the Angels would be paying him about $60 million for the rest of his team-controlled years. Getting his first five years of FA for $18 million/year might be one of the greatest contracts in MLB history. If the Angels went year-to-year with him and then signed him when he hit FA, they might wind up costing themselves an additional $200 million.

I’m well aware of everything you wrote. I was responding to slarti in regards to his .900 OPS comment. It’s a ridiculous way to judge a 2b, or a SS for that matter when those positions have been traditionally defensive first.

Not at all comparing him to Bonds or Ruth. The comparison was made to make the point that he doesn’t deserve a 10 year deal at top money at that age.
Guys like A-Rod and Pujols that got 10 year deals were great and deserving (partially, of course). Cano has done nothing near as good as those guys.

Yeah, he hit .313/.379/.550 with 33HR which was a career year for him. This is what I referred to as his prime. He is not going to repeat those numbers as he gets into the wrong side of thirties. When I said above average production I was projecting what he might do as he ages and not the career year you posted.

Cano is arguably one of the best players in the league and his position. That being said

5 years 100 million with team options for 6th and 7th is a fair offer to give him so by the end of deal he’ll be 36 and they can reevaluate if hes worth the last 2 years

Uh, no they wouldn’t. Those players are under team control for at least the next couple of years. They can either play for their current teams or sit at home and do nothing. Why would a team fork over $150+ million to a player that has no leverage?

Morgan also played in a completely different offensive era, most of his years were during a time of low offense/power. His career wRC+ and wOBA are significantly higher than Cano’s…and those includes Morgans complete decline phase through age 41….not to mention a pt of wOBA or wRC+ means more within the context of low offensive environments compared to those since 1993.

He’s had exactly 2 seasons with OPS over .900 and this is supposed to be his prime.

Joe Morgan is widely considered the best 2b ever, and he’s had three seasons of .900 OPS or better. You can’t just take one batting stat and apply it across all players evenly, as a .900 OPS hitter at 2b is significantly more valuable than one at LF. If you also think a guy who hit .313/.379/.550 with 33 HR at 2b is only above average, who are you comparing him against, Barry Bonds and Babe Ruth?

Yeah. Good luck with that Robbie. Even though that contract is ridiculous, A-Rod was freaking great when he signed that contract. (And A-Rod has never been accused of being lackadaisical on the field and you never see him not running out a ground ball hard.)
Don’t take this the wrong way, Cano is very good, but nowhere near as good to be deserving of a 10 year deal at age 31-32. He’s had exactly 2 seasons with OPS over .900 and this is supposed to be his prime. Why would they want to overpay for an aging player for above average but not great production.

Ideally, offer him a 4 year deal with a 5th year vesting option. But, more likely it’ll be 6 years and overpay. If he wants anything more than that, well, thanks for the good years Robbie.

I guess we will never find out will we. Call me silly but I would prefer to have more then 1 years MLB experience on the players resume before I threw 10 years and $200MM plus at a player for his services.
