Good points. It was just a little surprising because we don’t know, of course, where the team will be next October.

Say, for example, the Nats make the World Series but lose. Will Davey look at the team and think, maybe just one more year? I’m not doubting Davey’s sincerity, but folks can change their minds.

As for staying in the organization, that seems to have been a given all along.

It appears that the only reason DJ is coming back for even one more season was the Nats’ heartbreaking exit from the playoffs. At his age you have to figure he is treating every year in the game as if it might be his last, and I can’t say I blame him.

Davey loved his special advisor position. It allowed him to be heavily involved in baseball activities but at his own pace, speed, and timing. Managing doesnt allow for such freedom. And as much as he loves grooming our young team i think we all knew he was going back to that. So rather than have that eventual decision be a distraction, just tell everyone in advance, a la Bobby Cox.

Zero surprise that Davey re-signed.

Zero surprise that Davey will stay with the organization post-managing. This is the guy who Mike Rizzo called “part of the furniture” of his front office.

Small surprise that Davey committed to retiring after next season. Seems a little soon to be making that decision.
