drew, all I’m saying is that based on his numbers with the big league club do you honestly believe he’s a starter for the 2013 season. And my response is no. I think I can say that because IF the Red Sox had confidence in him being their guy in 2013 they never would have gone out and signed Ross to a 2 year/$6.2MM deal ($3.1MM annually)? Just my opinion.

As for his numbers in the minors that’s great, but the ML’s are not Double or even Triple A and there are countless players who had very nice minor league careers/numbers but were never more then role players in the big leagues.

It’s nice to have D-Ross back in the fold! And it would seem his stay will be longer this time. At the MLB level, he’s never played a game at any other position than C, so it will be interesting to see what the ‘more’ is. Perhaps some DH or 1B? Can’t imagine much more than that. Wild off-the-wall guess … player/catching coach?

In any event, in my estimation, this is the surest sign yet that the Red Sox intend to sign Mike Napoli. In fact, I’ll bet those conversations have probably progressed to the point that the Sox know there is significant interest on Napoli’s part.

Signing Ross is also a further encouraging sign of the return to the 2003/2004 philosophy – which included hedging bets by acquiring depth and using the resources on hand (available cash) to gain leverage in building the roster.

In this case, get your back-up Catcher in place NOW only increases their options is what was already to be a very active Winter. If and when the Sox sign Napoli, then both Salty and Lavarnway become trade assets (Although the Sox would probably feel more comfortable holding onto Lavarnway at AAA this season).

You’re balancing 209 career PA (none of that as a starter) versus five minor-league seasons in which he put up a composite .882 OPS?

Imagine you’re a GM for a rival MLB team. And Cherington contacted you about a possible trade involving Lavarnway. What would you be willing to give up for a guys with a line of:
BA: .157
OBP: .211
OPS: .459
And he threw out 10% of runners attempting to steal. Granted it’s on only about 170 PA +/- but still he provided no offense and couldn’t throw anyone out.
Now would you be comfortable having him as your starting catcher for 2013? For me the answer is a pretty obvious. NO.

Strongly suspect Salty will be the one traded. Lavarnway is cheap and a good prospect; Salty will start getting more expensive, has never had a good year, and at 27 isn’t likely to get better.

Watching Saltalamacchia swing and miss virtually every pitch is mind-numbing. However, he at least makes up for it by being brutal defensively.

Good signing by the Red Sox. Now the question is what about Salty? He made $2.5MM in 2012 and is arbitration eligible for the 2nd time in 2013.

Lavarnway isn’t going to net the Red Sox much via a trade so is Salty the one that gets moved? If that’s the case Ross from everything I’ve seen isn’t a starter and obviously neither is Lavarnway. So it looks like the Red Sox may still be in the market for a starting catcher even after this deal.
