I wouldn’t complain if it happened (Napoli’s been a Red Sox killer) but I don’t think the Sox should sign him. A Salty/Ross platoon should provide at worst league average offense at catcher (forget Lavarnway, he has no business playing in the major leagues) and adding Napoli to the mix would just be getting greedy. Unless they trade Salty I don’t see any role for Napoli other than everyday first baseman, and that’s not where the Red Sox should be (over)spending right now.

He would make a fine replacement for Adrian Gonzalez over at first base. His ability with the tools of ignorance are an asset rather than detraction for a deal with the Red Sox. Any surplus bodies can be traded for arms at this stage. In addition he could be signed then flipped for a pitcher. I understand that James Shields might be available for the right bats or a catcher, of which Mr. Napoli is both, though it is foolish to expect this one as the Rays will be unlikely to trade within the division.

The reason they are still looking at Napoli is because they dont see him as a full time catcher, and probably see him as more 1B than catcher at this point.

Napoli and Ross sounds good to me and say see ya to both Salty’s K’s and Lavarnway.
