Huge difference with LA being flush with cash and Boston not having just fleeced the Commonwealth for a new stadium. That said, it’s a sound business decision. Sell! Sell! Sell! Bane Capital would approve anyway.

To play devil’s advocate for a second, ignoring Miami in the process. This is really only a decent trade for Toronto. They are paying twice for most of these guys. Once in prospects, and once in cash….and for at least 3 of them (Reyes, Buerhle, and Buck), they will be over-paying them…and then, of course, Johnson is a major health risk, and Bonafacio isn’t actually very good. So….yes, Toronto should be better, but it was a very expensive upgrade in terms of talent and dollars.

Unless Miami turns around and spends the money saved on some high quality FAs (which, let’s face it, isn’t happening)….it is just embarrassing from their perspective….not that this is a bad deal for them, because it isn’t….it is just that they just sold off much of their talent right after getting a new stadium and declaring themselves competitors over and over and over.

Honestly, it is a justifiable trade in the sense that the Marlins aren’t getting nothing – they’re just massively shedding payroll (and getting some pretty touted prospects). It’s not suicidal, in other words – if it wasn’t Loria and it wasn’t following last year (a 180 after a 180), it’d just be viewed like the Dodgers/Red Sox trade.

I suspect MLB and Selig in particular will be red faced mad and kind of WANT to find an excuse to veto it, but it’d be damn hard for them to make the case, I think.

This is why fans don’t show up to the games. I bought season tickets last year but I will not make that mistake again. This is the most horribly run franchise in all of sports and quite possibly in the history of sports.
