That isn’t how it works. If the Dodgers are deemed to have not made a sincere effort to sign him, only bidding to keep him from other teams, then the team with the next highest bid is awarded the rights and time to work out a deal.

The Dodgers appear to have admitted that they may not try to sign him publicly, that is not how teams are supposed to use the system and Ryu and his team should be pissed.

I can see a couple purposes. It keeps agents in check from making even more outlandish demands. And no one says the home team has to take the highest bid, so if Ryu negotiations fail, then maybe next time they’ll be more methodical and decide to take a lower bid from a team that is wiling to move mountains in order to invest in the Korean market.

its an odd system…I say it can hurt a team because they offer a lot to just negotiate plus they pay the “posting fee” so yea I see it as an ok thing for them to have first crack at him but there should be a way for other teams to take a shot AFTER that…it doesn’t make sense why they go back to their home land and have to wait another year…

So, basically, they can decide not to sign him, and no other team gets a chance to sign him, and they get their money back. Great system.
