Unless Hamilton comes down to earth in the ballpark of $125-135mil, they won't sign him. I do think it's worth their while to pursue and perhaps offer a contract that's slightly more incentive ladden, but the only way they have a shot is if the market drops a bit. That being said, I'd like both pieces to join this clubhouse.

I would actually be great if they signed Gomes; he seems to be a guy that would fit extremely well into the the O's locker room. After the O's sign Hamilton, they will be pretty LH heavy in the lineup, so this will help balance that a little.

Somehow I think the A's will miss Gomes more than they expect this year. Looking at the performances of the A's outfield, Jonny was consistent with his career numbers especially in a platoon context. The A's are expecting the other outfielders to maintain their levels, which may be problematic, as we don't have a good baseline for several of them (Reddick, Cespedes), and Moss looks to be more of a 1B going forward. It's entirely possible that Reddick and Cespedes will actually improve (we live in hope), and Jonny was not good, shall we say, defensively. I won't get into Gomes' bench and clubhouse intangibles, which are apparently very strong, but the A's were a grim bunch under Geren, and certainly less so last year under Melvin. We'll see how much Gomes' contributed to that vibe about mid-May.
