Hey, the Marlins are rebuilding!

Nov 14, 2012, 3:51 PM EDT

Scott Maine

You think that all the Marlins do is ship off talent? Bah! They’re bringing it in too: they just claimed Scott Maine off waivers from the Blue Jays.

The lefty had a 6.08 ERA in 26 and a third innings pitching for the Indians and the Cubs. If he has a good year on 2013 he’ll probably be part of next winter’s fire sale.

Loria is actually already looking to trade him for a bag of peanuts.

  2. cur68 - Nov 14, 2012 at 3:59 PM

He’s got a starting rotation to rebuild. He needs one more guy. Mathis can pitch a little. He might be the #5 guy. I’m not even kidding.

    • paperlions - Nov 14, 2012 at 4:12 PM

Mathis hits like a pitcher…so…that could work.

      • cur68 - Nov 14, 2012 at 4:15 PM

He’s got 3 pitches: Change up, straight ball and “hanging grapefruit down the middle”. Oliver Perez had a job with about that.

      • natstowngreg - Nov 14, 2012 at 6:08 PM

OK, but Oliver Perez is a lefty and, thus, has an advantage over Mathis. Unless Mathis can switch-pitch.

    • ThatGuy - Nov 14, 2012 at 4:17 PM

Exactly, they need pitchers to rebuild. If only they had an innings eater like Buehrle or a potential ace like Johnson on the squad…

  3. kkolchak - Nov 14, 2012 at 4:33 PM

Judging from that photo, at least Maine is used to pitching in front of non-existent crowds.

  4. proudlycanadian - Nov 14, 2012 at 4:49 PM

Curses! Main was ticketed for the Jay’s Triple A team. A major loss for the fans in Buffalo.

      Edit Function: Maine

Why didn’t the Marlins just ask to have him included in the trade? It would have saved them the waiver claim fee.

    • stevejeltzjehricurl - Nov 14, 2012 at 5:21 PM

Loria didn’t know there was a fee! Rescind that claim immediately!

      • bougin89 - Nov 14, 2012 at 6:09 PM

Great comment. Actually made me laugh out loud!

Breaking News: Marlins trade mascot Billy the marlin to the Mets for a ball boy and a box of cracker jacks!

    • Old Gator - Nov 14, 2012 at 5:45 PM

Does he get one of those little round plastic swastikas in the box? At least you can play skelly with them. The plastic jumping frog is a piece of shit.

Little confused as to why Marlins fans are so upset…..3 of these guys were only here a year, and probably only Reyes had a chance to still be around when the team is rebuilt well enough to win….they got a good return in prospects, and financial flexibility; only issue is that future free agents have be wary of coming to Miami, at least without a no-trade clause…..

    • Old Gator - Nov 14, 2012 at 5:46 PM

You, um, know anything at all about the history of this franchise, do you?

  8. lew24 - Nov 14, 2012 at 5:29 PM

    Major League 4-The Marlins!

    • jerze2387 - Nov 14, 2012 at 6:33 PM

Irony: they wanted to move TO miami in Major League. AND Maine is wearing an indians uniform in the pic…

    • manchestermiracle - Nov 14, 2012 at 6:43 PM

You forgot about Loria trashing the Expos, with Selig’s help.

    • Old Gator - Nov 15, 2012 at 1:00 AM

You wanna cast this flick? Oh, the possibilities. Let’s start: Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Ozzie Guillen. Come on. You know you want him.

I would have taken Vincent Gardenia to play Scrooge McLoria if he were a little younger. I might still give it to Danny DeVito. Kermit the Frog to play the Chihuahua. Jim Broadbent as Teflon Larry.

Don Cheadle as Jose Reyes. Samuel L. Jackson (lots of makeup) as the Hanster. Tim Curry as Tweeter. And Will Smith in his Ali body suit as the Iron Giant.

A different source regarding Loria and Selig, a couple of fine pieces of work:

  10. flabuck - Nov 14, 2012 at 9:16 PM

they forgot to trade the outfield scupture or is that player to be announced at a later date

  11. Bruce Knutson - Nov 14, 2012 at 9:45 PM

Loria is not the problem, he is just part of it. He is one of Selig’s boys and has free reign.
