Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Giants are “optimistic” about re-signing Marco Scutaro and believes that a two-year deal will soon be done.

The NLCS MVP fits best with the Giants, by a long shot. They have a second base slot and won’t be tempted to try to give him time at shortstop, which he likely can’t play well anymore. Plus: late season + playoff hero status means good vibes all around.

He would be a great fit, and compared to the players at 2B for the Giants over the past few years, has a chance to be both healthy and productive.

But. He is 37 this coming season. You can never tell what you are going to get with players that age. The Giants I’m sure know that, and will have a Plan B.

A two year deal would be perfect. By 2015 Joe Panik will have had three full seasons in the minors (if he isn’t called up by then) and should be more than ready to takeover at 2B.

I just feel great about the fact that I reported this two days ago
