Great Moments in Scott Boras: The Rafael Soriano pitch to the Yankees

Nov 16, 2012, 1:02 PM EDT

Peter Gammons heard about the pitch Rafael Soriano and Scott Boras made to the Yankees. It’s tasty:

If I’m Brian Cashman I come back with “we won 20 World Series without a closer at all. Of the other seven, five were won with the guy you’re now bashing by default. We’ll take our chances.”

But you gotta love the stones on Boras for coming up with this one.

WOW! just wow! taking a shot at Mo? REALLY?

By now, Scott Boras has established that he will make just about any argument to get his clients more money.

that’s what lawyers do – take a fact and spin it like a top.

I originally read the tweet as Gammons being unserious and sarcastic. I guess it really is hard to decipher tone from tweet.

Craig, as best I can tell none of the teams Soriano has been on have won a World Series Title while he’s been on them.

If Boras was not a Sports Agent, he would have made a great late night TV pitchman

i can see Boras pushing Oxy Clean at 3am

Boras and the Sham-wow guy in a face off. That’s must-see tv.

Boras was a call in guest on the MLB Network Radio evening show either yesterday or the day before and made this exact claim word for word. I nearly crashed my car laughing at the gall of this fool. You do have to give him credit however, he really seemed to believe the nonsense he was spewing. I eventually had to turn the channel, the guy is absolutely living on another planet.

So he’s mastered embellishment and interplanetary travel.
Think he like offers exclusive rides as perks to certain MLB Owners? (Rizz?)

  6. rockthered1286 - Nov 16, 2012 at 2:03 PM

So Boras doesn’t thinik Pettite should be closing games? Got it.

  7. amaninwhite - Nov 16, 2012 at 2:11 PM

Cashman: Sorry Scott, one second please. (opens office door) Hey Mo, could you come in here please? Sorry Scott, you were saying?

As good as Soriano was for the Yankees he couldn’t touch Mariano Rivera in his prime. Plus his tendency to be overly sensitive made him a target in New York for the boo birds. He lack the courage to face the media whenever he blew a save by sneaking out of the clubhouse before the media assembled.

Mariano always stood and faced the media no matter the results. Class personified. There’ll never another like him. The likes of Soriano come a dime a dozen and as quickly as they come into the league is as quickly as they are gone.

    • purnellmeagrejr - Nov 18, 2012 at 8:26 AM

who cares (except for sportswriters) if they talk to the media after a game?

  9. zzalapski - Nov 16, 2012 at 2:14 PM

It wouldn’t surprise me if Boras and Cashman came up with this to troll sportswriters. Both sides already know Soriano is getting his payday elsewhere.

  10. randygnyc - Nov 16, 2012 at 2:24 PM

Considering there has never been a closer as good as Mariano, we’ll just have to wait and see. Boras is trying to make comparisons with the incomparable.

If Boras ever tires of being a sports agent, he could become a political pundit:

    Boras is a greedy douchebag!!!!

  13. jimbo75025 - Nov 16, 2012 at 6:45 PM

Anybody just get the feeling that the first thing Boras does when he has a free agent on the market is call the Yankees? I wonder why?

    • natstowngreg - Nov 16, 2012 at 6:52 PM

Not true. The first team Boras calls is the Nats. Because, um, like, he’s the evil puppeteer pulling Mike Rizzo’s strings.

    Lies, damn lies, and statistics…….
