Andy likes to do the “Hamlet” thing. It has been in his repertoire since the 2004 season. Waiting him out will probably work fine, although it can’t be good for a GM’s blood pressure. I also agree that planning on more than 150 innings would be very optimistic.

I think the problem there would be he would want to much money and wouldn’t be satisfied with a role the Yankees might have available.
Another “reclamation project” that comes to mind is: Roberto Hernandez (AKA: Fausto Carmona). I think he might jump at the opportunity. The only question is he to much of a reclamation project.

by that time, I’d expect that he’ll be needed, since at least one of the starters out of the gate is almost guaranteed to be either injured or terrible by the time we’re a few months in.

If Pettitte re-signs with the Yankees and can give them 140 to 150 innings that will be more then enough, compared to the 75 he gave them in 2012 due to the injury. The Yankees will have Phelps as their spot starter and long relief guy. They will probably also sign a “reclamation” project (Freddy Garcia type, but not Freddy). Then hopefully come the All Star break or trade deadline Pineda can be eased back into the rotation. The Yankee pitching situation will be just fine for 2013.

I think the chances of Pettitte pitching anywhere near 200 innings is so remote that to plan on it would be foolhardy.
