For the record, Ross played 20 games in LF this year. 93 in Right Field. So I’m not sure your argument about his famliarity with the Green Monster is really that great.

so what you are telling me is you want to pay Cody Ross 25 million over 3 years to play left field (even though he’s pretty bad there), and stun the growth of Bryce Bentz, Jackie Bradley Jr, and possibly Xander Bogarets (if he moves to the outfield). Cody Ross is not getting any younger. He can hit at Fenway but he’s only going to get worse on the road. Why not give Gomes a 2 year deal to be a platoon player (in right field), and then a 4th outfielder in 2014. Instead of having Ross around in 14 and 15 when he will be a 4th outfielder on this team come 2014. (Brentz in RF, JBJ in CF, Ellsbury or Bogarets in LF). Let someone else pay him a 3 year deal, we got young players coming up and I’d rather them start. Oh and Gonzalez hit .347 at Fenway in 2011, but I’m still not sure how that relates to this topic..

edelmanfanclub, are Ross’s numbers versus RHP also inflated. Perhaps you remember how the Red Sox fans were so excited about Adrian Gonzalez coming to Fenway. And how they talked about how many more HR’s and RBI’s, etc… he would have coming from San Diego to Boston because his swing was built for Fenway. That never materialized. The truth is you know what you are or were going to get from Ross playing in Fenway you can only hope that Gomes can you you something close to that. And don’t underestimate Ross being a better left-field then Gomes in Fenway. You only have to recall Crawford and the nightmares he left Red Sox fans with playing left field.

those splits only justify more that Ross isnt worth the money. Yeah he’s a better fielder but he still isn’t very good. Both players are much better vs lefties thats a given. But Ross’ number are fenway inflated. If he had the road numbers of Gomes he could be a .285 hitter not a .267 hitter.

The Red Sox will at least have access to the milk (it lasts 18 months according to Jonny AND you can keep it in your trunk!) that he is pushing/promoting/helping deliver to the victims of Sandy in NYC/NJ. His community service is about the only positive is can glean from this situation.

The Red Sox are throwing in the towel on 2013 and just want you to “believe” so they can keep their fake sellout streak alive.

The numbers don’t lie that’s true. But the can be misleading especially when you leave out each players numbers:

“vs: RHP
Gomes: .209 / .324 / .391
Ross: .256 / 308 / .422

Home:
Gomes: .252 / .347 / .417
Ross: .298 / .356 / .565

And while neither player is going to win a Golden Glove Award. Ross is a noticeably better fielder.

This off season, as a Red Sox fan, for the exact opposite reason I keep saying those exact words.

I cant believe people are calling Jonny Gomes a poor mans Cody Ross. Cody Ross is not worth 8 million annually. Gomes however is worth 4 million annually even its a platoon role. Just look at the stats, numbers do not lie.

vs LHP
Gomes: .299/.413/.561
Ross: .295/.373/.636

Road
Gomes: .273/.409/.578
Ross: .232/.294/.390

Ross had a 2.4 WAR .345 wOBA and 22 HR in 528 PA
Gomes had a a 2.1 WAR, .331 wOBA and 18 HR in 333 PA

Both are not good fielders. I think its worht paying Gomes 4 million less for the same results on a shorter deal.

Absolutely agree with you 100%.

While Gomes is nothing to get excited about, he’ll provide decent value for his cost and be a complement to Kalish in a platoon without getting his ego bent out of shape. Ortiz hammers lefties, so they don’t really need him to DH, but if they get a left-handed hitting first baseman, he could play there some of the time as well.

Paying Cody Ross 6, 7, 8, 9 million a year for three or even years is insane. He’ll never come close to playing at a level that would justify that cost. Most of his home runs last year were meaningless stats long after the Red Sox were buried in a game. He had one decent hot streak to win a few games, but other than that, good riddance.

It’s not like they’re not signing Gomes to a 10 year/200 million contract. Spring training is three months away………..why are people running around screaming, waving their arms over their head like the roster the Red Sox have right now is the one they’re going to have then or even April 1st?

A few monster moves are coming………….’effin relax.

I’m sorry but going 3 years on Cody Ross, who had one of his best years at age 31 would have been colossally stupid for the Red Sox. He had his best year since 08, couldnt hit worth a damn away from Fenway and the Red Sox aren’t looking for a long term option here. They will probably go with a platoon like they planned last year, with either Kalish or Sweeney taking on right handed hitters. The red sox SHOULD be cheap in this case and then go out and spend big dollars (if they were going to at all) on pitching

The only fly in that ointment. Is the Red Sox ownership has come out publicly several times already and said “no more expensive, long term deals”. You have to know that each of the players you mentioned should they actually get to FA’s (which I doubt) will command at least 7 plus year deals. They will make Adrian Gonzalez’s deal look like chump change. That’s just my opinion.

I’m obviously no Red Sox fan. But I do have occasion to feel bad for Sox fans, not for the Red Sox but for their fans. No teams fans should have had to put up with what the Sox fans went through in 2012. That includes from ownership’s turning a blind eye to what was happening to Valentine alienating everyone (coaches, players and the media) to the what I will call the player mutiny.

I mentioned in the “What What Steinbrenner Do” thread that there are some big name FA’s coming up in ’14 (Verlander, Hernandez, Kershaw, and Andrus) as a reason or the Yanks to keep up with the $189M payroll plan. Maybe the Sox are doing something similar? With $55M, or let’s say 45-50M available, they could easily throw huge contracts at two of those players and have two top 10 guys in baseball on their team, maybe even three.

I think the Sox are thinking long term. They have a couple of outfielders that are about 1 1/2 years away from the show in Brentz and Bradley. Gomes will be the fourth outfielder on this team, i believe. I gotta believe Cherington is going after some others. At least I would hope…

Apparently the Red Sox have thrown in the towel on re-sign Cody Ross. If that’s the case I see this as a net minus for the Red Sox. Gomes instead of Ross in my opinion not a good decision, even if Ross was looking for an extra year. After all the Red Sox saved over $55MM per season by moving Gonzalez, Crawford and Beckett. Looks like the Sox are going on the cheap again this year.
