Doesn't Evan acquire 10/5 rights at some point? There isn't a no-trade clause in the contract, but I presume by 2017 he'll have a defacto no-trade clause in place.

I'd like to think that by signing for cheaper money early in his career and doing this deal through 2022 that the Rays understand he wants to be a Ray and nothing else. I wish, for his sake however, that he would have gotten that shit in writing. You never know if the Rays will turn into Marlins North.

Good for Evan for getting this deal. I still think he did a cool thing with his first deal, all that taking less money to prove to the franchise how much he wanted to stay put and that he's committed. We don't EVER see that anymore. So congrats Evan for not being a douche.

Good deal for the Rays and smart for Longoria to ensure his financial future. A win for both sides. Now if only the Rays didn't play in a town that supports them like the solid franchise they are.

Doubt seriously that's an overpay. By 2020 the average price for a good 3rd baseman could easily be 20 MM$. Don't think today's dollars.

I also believe he had a very very cheap contract prior to this extension. Wasn't it like 5yr / 19m?

Yeah, great points for sure! I guess as a Sox fan I'm just jealous. After all, in the year 2013, Evan Longoria will make only 1 million more than Jonny Gomes.

Looks like a back-loaded contract for me. 6 years at $100 million would be $16.67 million/year, but the first four years of the extension are anywhere from a little to a lot less than that.

Also, you have to take into account the fact that the marginal value of a win keeps going up, right along with average salaries - 18 million in 2021 most likely will not be nearly as bad as 18 million today.

Those years he probably will be overpaid. However, for the next 5-7 years he's probably goingn to be underpaid, so overall I think it's a pretty decent contract. At least, as decent as a $100+ million deal can be.
