Angels fans, if this guy is healthy, he is a steal. As a Phils fan, I was hoping they would bring him back here. When he is on, he is a beast. Good luck Mad Dog.

Agree with Gem860. Most of Madsons success in Philly was as an awesome 8th inning guy. They tried him several times over the years as a closer, but it was like he got a case of the yips whenever he was in the 9th instead of the 8th. He finally got past that the last year or two in Philly and he was good. If he’s healthy and on his game, this is a good signing for him and the Angels. He can establish his health and performance and look for a 3 year deal next year.

In actuality Madson didn’t start off the Phils season in 2011 as their closer. He was their set-up man because of his poor performances in the past when he was put into the closer role. In fact, it was injuries/ineffectiveness to two different closers of their choice that year before the Phils were forced to use him in the closer role. Yes, he excelled and saved 32/34 chances that year but his overall track record in that role was not great with the team. The Phils signed Papelbon instead because of that past history.

Please stop showing pictures of him in the Reds uniform. The guy had like one long toss session in a reds uni and that was it. Pretty sad statement on his career if that’s the most relevant picture they have of him.

32/34 save oppurtunities in his first full year as closer in 2011? That sounds like shut down to me. Especially considering the Angels have lead the league in blown saves this year and the last. Shut ur mouth and look up the stats.

Madson has a nastttttttttty change up and definitely can be a “shut down” closer regardless of whatever BS stats you wanna throw out there. As a Phillies fan I was hoping we got him back again. Madson will definitely close out games……especially close games like he did plenty of times for the Phillies. Whatever stats you read about him and blown saves is major BS cause he was the only effective guy to shut the other teams down for the Phillies at the time and I am sure he will bounce back Post TJ. Bad move for angels. A year after tommy John usually means much growing pains to get back to where u were professionally before. Walt Jocketty too smart to really want him back.

Blown saves really include both blown saves and blown holds.

To use that statistic in a meaningful way, you either have to examine save+hold percentage or use just the blown saves for portions of his career when he was serving as the closer.

Madson was actually only a “shut down” closer for half of a season. If you look at the stats you might be surprised. He only has 52 saves and has blown 26 in his career.

He’ll likely get between 6-7 million plus incentives which could make it worth 8 million. As an Angel fan, Im pleased with this move. He’ll come here and likely have the same success that Joe Nathan had last year coming off TJ surgery with Texas. If he can be a shut down closer like his past says he can, the Angels will win 5-10 more games than they did last year. The team was one of the league leaders in blown saves last season. This year, with Madson and Kyuji Fujikawa (hopefully) they wont have that same problem. Jordan Walden needs to step up this year though as well. Its about time he lives up to his potential.
