Everyone usually gets a raise after each year of the arbitration process. Unless they come to a 1 year contract avoiding arbitration, In Jurrjens case the Braves just want to cut their losses because a offer for him is going to something like 70% decrease. I’m sure someone will give him a try on a minor league deal.

Answer is simple, if he was a free agent how much would he make? Easily more than $5.5 mill. More like triple that. The market value would determine the raise.

I question the automatic assumption that someone is going to get a raise in arb. The Braves don’t have to offer a raise. In fact, they can offer as little as $4.4 million (20% pay cut). And it would be audacious for Jurrjens to submit for too mucy of a raise. The arbitrator could easily decide that stinky production isn’t worth more than $4.4 million.

Now, you might very well say something like, “Jurrjens will make at least $4.4 million in arbitration, and the Braves think that is too much.”

Agreed on taking a flier: depending on those injuries he might be good again.

But there’s a world of difference between a specific problem in the knee vs something squirrelly going on in the hat. You can usually tell if a physical malady can be overcome, but Liriano’s a bag of crazy. Notice that so far this winter the Twins are being polite and the White Sox are being quiet. They’ve worked with him and aren’t fighting to get him back. We’ll see if Atlanta might try to take back Jurrjens at some lower rate.

I would love to see the transcript of his arbitration hearing if he were to go. The argument his side put up for why he deserves a raise would be classic comedy.

Not to worry about Jair. He was a Brave. Dayton Moore has contracts waiting on every Braves player in their system, just waiting for them to be released so they can come to Kansas City.

Worth a flier on a team like the Twins, Cubs, Astros, or others, imo. If he can get his stuff back, he is a damn solid middle-of-the-rotation pitcher. Then again, we’ve said similar things about Francisco Liriano for years.
