Derek Jeter is not in The Best Shape of His Life

Nov 30, 2012, 9:11 AM EDT

Mr. Creosote

God love the New York Post. They got a paparazzi photo of Derek Jeter not looking his best yesterday, and ran it with the headline “Derek Jeter packing on the pounds during recovery.” It ain’t exactly newsworthy, but it’s fun and I’m pretty OK with fun being the threshold for most things sports-related, especially on November 30.

But let’s be fair, folks: the dude has a broken leg and can’t put any weight on it, so it’s not like he’s been able to log time on the treadmill.  Given the guy’s history, there is no reason whatsoever to think that, the second he can be active, he’ll be in better shape than you and me and just about everyone else.

But at least you’ll have this picture to cheer you up a bit when Jeter beats your team by going 4 for 5 with two doubles or whatever next summer.

Broken leg + New York dining + Derek Jeter = a few extra pounds. Dont exactly need a PHD to understand that. Its not even December, and what athlete in the world cant lose a few extra pounds in 3 months?

Bad news for the gift basket industry.

    • bsbiz - Nov 30, 2012 at 9:28 AM

In an unrelated news story, FTD’s stock price dropped 2% this morning…

      • chadjones27 - Nov 30, 2012 at 9:46 AM

Even with the pounds, Derek Jeter will still score just as much as before. All he has to do is use one of the best pick-up lines ever, “Hello, my name is Derek Jeter, wanna bang?”

      • Liam - Nov 30, 2012 at 1:33 PM

What are your hopes, what are your dreams?

  3. Cris E - Nov 30, 2012 at 9:21 AM

He kind of looks like he could be related to Cashman in those pictures. I bet neither of them is happy about that. (“No way, I’m an athlete.” vs “No way, I’m paying him a trillion dollars to be an athlete. He better not look like me.”)

  4. mdpickles - Nov 30, 2012 at 9:22 AM

He’ll be fine. He’s due to receive some HGH as a Christmas present and will get after it following the New Year. Just kidding, DJ is the man!

  5. mrwillie - Nov 30, 2012 at 9:23 AM

Thanks, now I have a craving to watch Hunt For Red October and Monty Python this weekend.

    • Old Gator - Nov 30, 2012 at 11:05 AM

Well, don’t watch the Mr. Creosote episode just after eating, or, especially, just before. And don’t watch it with your dogs. For some reason it really makes mine hungry.

And above all, don’t sthkimp on the pa-hey.

      • mrwillie - Nov 30, 2012 at 11:28 AM

Oh dear, I have trodden in Monsieur’s bucket.

Indeed, their should be a 2-3 hour time limit, on either side of a meal, for watching Mr. Creosote.

  6. sdelmonte - Nov 30, 2012 at 9:24 AM

    Stop picking on Derek!

    • 18thstreet - Nov 30, 2012 at 3:02 PM

Donald Trump has come to his defense:

Gotta keep in mind though, the older you get the harder you have to work to shed that excess weight.

Not saying he won’t do it, but I am saying it’ll be tough for him to be in prime shape early.

    • paperlions - Nov 30, 2012 at 9:36 AM

…and the harder you have to work just to stay in shape….he is at that age where his basal metabolism is significantly slowing down…so any down time at all will result in a much faster accumulation of weight than when he (or any of us) was younger….but yeah, I expect him to look the same come March…nice to see that he is “one of us” though.

  8. Caught Looking - Nov 30, 2012 at 9:29 AM

DJ looks like he has some serious heartburn too.

  9. dluxxx - Nov 30, 2012 at 9:29 AM

“How are you doing Mr. Jeter?”

    “Beter.”

    “Better Sir?”

“Better get a bucket. I’m going to throw up!”

  10. number42is1 - Nov 30, 2012 at 9:31 AM

and yet he will still get more and hotter ass than most folks here…

  11. raysfan1 - Nov 30, 2012 at 10:03 AM

He’ll be a little slower next year due to that leg, so those doubles may be long singles.

  12. mybrunoblog - Nov 30, 2012 at 10:26 AM

The creepy thing is that TMZ probably has a team of “reporters?” flying down to Tampa as we speak to get the first Derek Jeter chubby pics.

  13. indaburg - Nov 30, 2012 at 10:32 AM

Yep, gotta love the post. Saucer of milk, table for two, me-ow.

  14. Old Gator - Nov 30, 2012 at 11:06 AM

Um – anybody heard from Yankeesfanlen lately? The playoffs were probably brutal for him but I’m getting a bit worried at his silence.

    • The Rabbit - Nov 30, 2012 at 12:07 PM

      Hey Gator,
None of the “league” has heard from him since the beginning of the playoffs.
I’ll try calling him this afternoon.

    • APBA Guy - Nov 30, 2012 at 12:43 PM

He had a long spell of silence earlier this year also.

      • The Rabbit - Nov 30, 2012 at 2:57 PM

        Hi APBA,
Yep, but we knew he where he was. Part of the time he and cur68 were visiting me and we went to games at Kauffman and Busch.
Shortly after, he was vacationing for 6 weeks. We (The1st Unofficial HBT Fantasy League) did get e-mails.
Len’s best friend is a Tigers fan. We expected to hear from him during the playoffs and didn’t.

  15. albertmn - Nov 30, 2012 at 11:15 AM

Jeter isn’t exactly looking like Captain Cool in those pics.

    • jayscarpa - Nov 30, 2012 at 12:38 PM

      Captain munch

  16. shynessismyelguapo - Nov 30, 2012 at 11:33 AM

He’s also wearing baggy clothes on a windy day. That’s bound to make anyone look chubbier than they actually are.

  17. stabonerichard - Nov 30, 2012 at 12:24 PM

Derek might be looking a bit chubby now but I (and probably quite a few of y’all) will be sporting some chub of our own once The Jete Man is back patrolling the middle of the diamond come spring.

  18. weaselpuppy - Nov 30, 2012 at 1:17 PM

Jeter’s chances of being ready opening day are wahfer thin….

  19. stabonerichard - Nov 30, 2012 at 1:24 PM

And in related news, hunky veteran country music star Randy Travis is in the best shape of his life. He keeps this up, he might be headed to a ballpark near you for some Opening Day national anthem action.

    • historiophiliac - Nov 30, 2012 at 2:29 PM

Am I the only one who gets freaked out when they see a Trans Am now?

  20. sophiethegreatdane - Nov 30, 2012 at 2:18 PM

Those pics were either photoshop’d or he has some kind of weird skinny mutant arm thing happening.
