The hesitation is that he’s 33 and just had a career year. There is no guarantee he replicates those numbers. I like LaRoche and hope he resigns, I just hope its no more than two years.

I think his DOB (11/6/79, according to Wikipedia) might have something to do with the Nats’ hesitation to give him three years. The Nats probably also believe that Rendon will be ready for the majors by 2015 at the latest, which might require Zimmerman moving to 1B so Rendon can play 3B.

The Span trade gives the Nats lots of options right now. They could re-sign LaRoche and trade Morse, or let LaRoche walk, let Morse play 1B in 2013 and then let Morse walk, opening 1B to either Zimmerman (if Rendon’s ready) or Tyler Moore (if he’s not) in 2014. I don’t think the Nats can carry Morse and LaRoche in 2013, though, except for inter-league games where one could DH.

The Nats should listen to Johnson. I was looking at Laroche’s stats yesterday and I don’t get the hesitation.
