Lannan and the Nats clearly fell out of love 2 years ago and the AAA stint in 2012 was the divorce filing. So no matter how much talent they might be throwing away, Lannan isn’t coming back and everybody saw that writing on the wall long ago. Baseball ain’t all dollars and sense and talent evals. I agree that he’d make a good 5th starter for any NL squad, but at $6 mil he’s too pricy for most teams. If he’s willing to take a pay cut then he’s sure to make someone very happy. Plus, he looks like the Muppet, Sam the Eagle, so the kids love him.

The Nats actually put out a statement on Flores, saying that he pressed too hard as a hitter (which makes sense to me – he never looks comfortable in the box), but more importantly that he didn’t call the games the way he had been instructed, and in some cases he went against the team’s wishes for certain hitters. That’s really bad. It’s so bad that his (former) team apparently feels no compunction about shivving him in the press. So yeah, Pittsburgh, if you want him, he’s all yours. For my money, just watching him commit dumb errors all the time, from an inability to block balls in the dirt to incorrectly framing pitches to letting lots of easy strikes fall out of his glove to just missing a lot of pitches that were a few inches outside and that went as passed balls, Jesus Flores is not an MLB-caliber starting catcher.

That’s odd, I don’t see that in Lannan’s stats at all…If you actually understand which of Lannan’s stats to interpret…there has been no regression whatsoever. He’s not a K pitcher, so his results are going to be subject to a lot more random variation than high K pitchers. But his K-rate, BB-rate, GB-rate, and HR-rate have not varied much at all over his career. He keeps the ball in the park and gives his fielders a chance to turn it into an out. He’s been a solid league-average pitcher that stats like FIP and XFIP is never going to love….and he’s never going to dominate….but he’s as good or better than most #4 starters in the league.

Jon Daniels should give him a call. If he’s ready to go on opening day, I’d be pretty confidant he finds a gig, and outperforms the 14mil$ man in Pit…. at least offensively.

Sorry to hear about Jesus Flores. Not that it was unexpected, but he was looking like a potential rising star as an offensive catcher before his catastrophic shoulder injury in 2009.

If you look closer at Lannan’s stats, he has been regressing since his sophomore campaign in 2009 (even excluding his two stints in the minors since then). His innings pitched per start have become particularly atrocious (A mere 5.32 last year at the MLB level).

It is telling that the Nats non-tendered him, because Mark Zuckerman reported yesterday that Lannan actually still has one more option left. That means the Nats could have tendered him and then stashed him at AAA again as an insurance policy, or swung a trade. The fact that they didn’t do that tells me that they don’t believe any other team would make a deal at his current salary level.

Even though there isn’t an infernal prayer that Scrooge McLoria and the Chihuahua would agree to spring for the kind of money Brian Wilson wants, I would love to see him in one of those tasteful Feesh uniforms with their play of gonorrhea discharge colors. Plus, I would like to see what kinds of tropical parasites would colonize his beard.

Bidding war would be stupid for Wilson..2 Tommy John surgeries and give high dollar gauranteed $$? My guesses that personality won’t be embraced as much as it was in SF. 2 of Wilson’s last 4 years have been majorly injury plagued

Lannan seems like the kind of pitcher suitable for the Cubs, Twins, or Royals, perhaps even the Pirates. You know what you’re going to get from the guy, and you can slot him into the middle or back of the rotation accordingly.

Gorzelanny should and likely will get a chance to start elsewhere, even if it’s just spot-start duty and mostly long relief. He’s got a similar skill set to Lannan but without the same quality of performance as a starter.

I’m intrigued by the potential for Brian Wilson to be released. If that’s the case, the market for him will also dictate the market for Joakim Soria, and vice versa. Both are proven closers who are coming off of elbow surgeries (granted, this is the 2nd time for Soria).

I put very little weight on Lannan’s Triple-A performance. The guy was twice the Nationals’ Opening day starter, and he was coming off a 2011 in which he posted a 3.70 ERA in 33 starts. He deserved better than to be stuck in Triple-A and he knew it.

Anyway, he’s always going to have crappy K/BBs. He’s no world-beater, but he’s worth $6 million in this market.

I don’t get it. The guy is mediocre at best. He had a terrible K rate in AAA this year, and not a great BB rate.
