Contrary to what some believe, Pagan’s .288 avg. was not a career best. He hit .290 for the Mets with over 500 AB and before that it was .300-plus in a breakout year. So his 2012 stats were not an outlier.His team-record 15 triples were mostly at AT&T, which proves that is the best park for his style of offense – a gap hitter and good base stealer.
Some reports after the World Series said he could command up to $14 mil a year, so this is a relative bargain for a team player in the prime of his career.
Brown is simply not ready, so you pretty much have to keep Pagan.
With the money that was saved on this, maybe they can throw some love to Hairston as a left fielder. I have always admired his consistent play and decent power. Plus, he’s always killed the Giants, so that would be one less headache to deal with. Blanco is a good fourth outfielder option for defense and a spot start. He slumped too much to be an everyday player when Bochey gave him a shot.

Whether you like Pagan for this amount or not, it’s definitely a win-win that they won’t waste money on the 3 players above.

Also… I guess this means Gary Brown’s only purpose is trade bait. He’s not a good enough hitter to justify playing in RF or LF, with most of his value being his range and speed in CF. Now he’s blocked for 4 years.
