Update: The Padres sign Jason Marquis

UPDATE: The deal is for one year, $3 million. Not bad for a guy who should eat some innings.

9:27 AMJayson Stark of ESPN reports that the Padres are close to re-signing starter Jason Marquis.

Marquis is fairly effective for the Padres after being DFA’d by the Twins early last season, going 6-7 with a 4.04 ERA.  A guy of his profile — pretty durable but pretty hittable — is well-suited to Petco Park.

Worth noting that my kids think he’s the best pitcher in baseball because last June 13 in San Diego they saw him start the first ever MLB game they attended, and he put up zeroes for six and a third against the Mariners.

Strength of opposition and park effects are hard concepts for a six year-old biy and an eight year-old girl to fully appreciate.

Are you at this meeting in this fabulous hotel and just sitting in the lobby checking the news on your phone?

One strategy for covering the winter meetings is to hang out in the lobby and see who’s talking to whom. Is that John Courtright (Greinke’s agent) heading to an elevator with Jerry DiPoto? Are they going to finalize a deal? That sort of thing. This approach sort of breaks down at this hotel because there are four lobbies.

After seeing Jeremy Guthrie get 3 years, 25 mill. a 1 year 3 mill year investment in a hitable pitcher doesn’t look too badly right now for the Padres.

There have been reports that the Padres were interested in Dan Haren and Shaun Marcum – but crappy Jason Marquis is the guy they end up with? So much for the Padres being a surprise team in 2013.

If 2013 is anything like 2012, all of the Padres’ starters will get hurt anyway, so it won’t make any difference.

Craig–I suppose rooting for Marquis is okay, but don’t let your kids turn into Padres fans. That’s a horrible fate and will scar them for life. (Don’t ask me how I know this.)
