I had forgotten that this was a thing. But it is a thing. And it’s now Billy Butler‘s thing:

Major League Baseball announced today that Billy Butler of the Kansas City Royals has been voted the winner of the 2012 Edgar Martinez Outstanding Designated Hitter Award.  Butler received 80 first-place votes out of 84 ballots cast to garner the honor for the first time in his six-year career.

As for the thing:

Now in its 38th season, the Outstanding Designated Hitter Award was renamed by Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig in a September 2004 ceremony at Safeco Field in honor of the retiring Edgar Martinez.  Ballots are cast by club beat writers, broadcasters and A.L. public relations departments with nominees including all players with a minimum of 100 at-bats as a DH.

On the year Country Breakfast — which is also a thing you may have forgotten — hit .313./.373/.510 with 29 homers and 107 RBI.

Outstanding Designated Hitter? Is that like when we were back in elementary school and all of the kids who couldn’t do anything else got perfect attendance awards?

Now, now. I always considered just getting to school alive was an accomplishment. I deserved those awards. Anyhow, South Texas, can you tell me if there’s there an award for best hitting pitcher? I’d love to see the recipient’s stat line.

Actually, I just realized that it was the Silver Slugger for pitchers. Strasburg this season. His gaudy hitting line is .277/.333/426/1/7 all in 47 ABs, too. Wow. What a hitting machine.

Gee, Cur, I liked your line about best hitting pitcher better than mine, anyway. As you can see from the thums downs, so did everyone else. I’m almost sorry there was a serious answer.

To borrow from another thread, maybe we need an award for best base-stealing catcher.

Best base stealing catcher? Great idea. We can only hope its another Molina. Never mind the thumbs. Some folks gots no sense of humour.

This is an award? Is there an award for best baserunner? Best Bullpen Catcher? Cmon.

How is this different than the Silver Slugger award?

    • seeinred87 - Dec 5, 2012 at 11:50 AM

Silver Slugger is voted on by coaches and managers, while the Edgar Martinez award is a BBWAA thing

our society in the USofA allows for garbage like this because bitchy moms bitch too much that their underachiever kids arent getting enough of what the rest of the kids that try get.

this is dumb. not everyone needs a trophy and guess what: some people lose. its how it goes in life.

the DH sucks and awards like this suck too.

Yes, I’m sure Billy Butler, who plays for the Kansas City Royals needs to be sat down and told: “You know, Billy. You can’t win all the time”
