I will admit that I do not relish hearing my Father gripe and moan the entire season should Skip be traded.
He absolutely loves the guy. For all the intagibles he brings…the productivity has been woefully lacking.

They will get an open roster spot, to me, that has enough value. I too like Skip as a person, I like the effort he gives, his attitude, all that….he’s just not a productive player at this point and the Cardinals have younger/cheaper options that provide the same skill set.

The idea that Skip Schumaker can play second base is a misnomer–he’s a liability there, which is why now two managers have essentially given up on Skip playing there (LaRussa stopped playing Schumaker at second in the second half of the 2011, and Matheny has told Matt Carpenter to practice playing the position in the off-season). The man is woeful at the position by any metric, traditional or saber. Schumaker is really just a fourth outfielder who doesn’t have the range to play CF or the bat to play the corners everyday.

From all reports, Daniel Descalso is also a great team guy in the locker room, so that’s a wash with me. Both Descalso and Carpenter can play multiple infield positions very well, which is what you want out of a utility player. The Cardinals need to upgrade the depth at middle infield, and keeping Schumaker is not the way to do it.

Also, there’s no evidence that the Cardinals really were pursuing Cabrera that hard. It seems discussions broke off pretty quickly. It also appears that the Cardinals would have moved Cabrera to second, where he would have been an upgrade over Descalso at the plate and Schumaker with the glove.

agree w/ basically everything being said here (minus ultimatecardinalwarrior idk what the hell that meant). i have a soft stop for skippy as well and love having him on our team but it won’t be a devastating loss and it would be good for him to be where his family is. I just hope we can get something we need from them.

Skip went to college at Santa Barbara, but is from the Laguna Niguel / Aliso Viejo area in South Orange County.

I was baffled when they gave him a 2 year deal in the first place, very McClellan’esque and we know how that one went.

By all reports he’s a great teammate and good all around guy, good luck to him moving forward if/when he does get moved.

Ok, so you’re not ok with replacing a poor defensive option at 2B with a slightly below average wOBA with an at least average (or above average to my eye test) defensive 2B with a slightly below average wOBA who is essentially a stop gap for a year until Kolten Wong gets promoted to an everyday player?

The above comments have merit. But losing Schumaker is not, I repeat is not devastating. No doubt his intangibles will be missed, but intangibles only go so far. Delscalso brings similar skills, is an emerging leader, and can provide similar leadership and far superior skills to Schumaker.

I for one, like many others, have a soft spot for Skippy. But he has always been a marginal player, to be generous. He is from SoCal, Santa Barbara area if I am not mistaken, and in all honesty if he chooses to move or accept a deal, I for one say adios, good luck, it has been swell, and you will be missed; just not that much.

I agree- hate to see Skip go –a real team player with a lot of value.Cant understand the thinking of the Cards–they put DD in over Skip at second and gave up 50 points in ba because of superior defense yet are looking to trade for a SS with very meiocre defensive skills……….

“The Cardinals are not tone deaf to clubhouse culture. Consider that the team will be losing Lance Berkman and Kyle Lohse from last year’s team. Both were personalities and had presence in the clubhouse — Berkman’s was just more gregarious and better advertised. Schumaker is part of the fiber of the club. He has the faith of his teammates and is one of the rare players who no matter his role can effectively lead or influence the team. You are correct: Moving him will leave an absence that isn’t so obviously filled off the field.”

Schumaker is one of my favorite Cardinals and very under rated. he can easily be an everday player with a high .290 ish batting average and a solid utility player
