For Davey Johnson, the Nats slogan this year is “World Series or bust”

Dec 4, 2012, 3:07 PM EDT

Davey Johnson just sat for his annual managers’ press conference here at the Winter Meetings.  He’s not talking about Natitude. Rather:

“World Series or bust. That’s probably the slogan this year.”

Gentlemen, start printing your t-shirts.

I’m still wearing my “¡Si, MotherF*cker!” t-shirt. Davey and his slogan can get in line.

    • skids003 - Dec 4, 2012 at 3:31 PM

DO you wear it around your ears so your brains don’t spill out?

      • cur68 - Dec 4, 2012 at 3:33 PM

There you go again: assuming that everyone is like you. Dude, don’t assume. It makes an ass out of you.

      • skids003 - Dec 4, 2012 at 3:48 PM

Don’t have to with you cur.

      • cur68 - Dec 4, 2012 at 3:51 PM

        DO (sic)

  2. greatdayfortwo - Dec 4, 2012 at 3:15 PM

Is there an asterisk next to that slogan to say they’ll settle for the NLDS if Strasburg is shutdown prematurely again?

  3. greatdayfortwo - Dec 4, 2012 at 3:16 PM

Is there an asterisk next to that slogan to say they’ll settle for the NLDS if Strasburg is shutdown prematurely again?

  4. stex52 - Dec 4, 2012 at 3:20 PM

Wait! I thought they told us that the next five years were guaranteed when they shut Strasburg down!

    Isn’t it a sure thing?

    • nolanwiffle - Dec 4, 2012 at 4:03 PM

No they didn’t, and no it’s not a sure thing.

    • natstowngreg - Dec 4, 2012 at 4:08 PM

There were no guarantees. Just a decision by management that the team’s chances would be better in the next few years.

      • stex52 - Dec 5, 2012 at 9:22 AM

Greg, actually I apologize. I was feeling snarky yesterday. Comment was aimed more at your over-enthusiastic brethren on this blog. But no harm intended.

      • natstowngreg - Dec 5, 2012 at 3:52 PM

        Not a problem.

    That’s a clown comment bro!

  7. paperlions - Dec 4, 2012 at 3:27 PM

Congrats Davey, isn’t that the slogan of about 1/2 the teams in MLB each year?

  8. tcostant - Dec 4, 2012 at 3:39 PM

Not so new, Davey said the same thing last month when he was interviewed on the ML Network the day he won manager of the year awad.

  9. paperlions - Dec 4, 2012 at 4:01 PM

Seems rather overly dramatic, doesn’t it? They are going to contract the franchise if they don’t win the 2013 WS? I mean, that is what “or bust” means, right? So….hey…no pressure guys.

    • natstowngreg - Dec 4, 2012 at 4:32 PM

Nah, it’s just Davey being Davey. He’s been more optimistic than the organization as a whole. Mike Rizzo probably cringed a little when he heard it. Especially the “or bust” part. Davey is a valued advisor to the GM, in addition to being the mamager. But the GM sets the direction, and Rizzo has made it clear that he’s trying to balance winning next season with winning in the longer term.

Davey isn’t really creating a lot of additional pressure. The pressure is there already. The Nats won 100 games (including playoffs) last season, and the team has a good nucleus of young talent. The Nats have progressed enough that they will be expected to make the playoffs. If they meet that expectation (no guarantees, of course), winning the World Series is possible (given the unpredictable nature of the playoffs).

      • paperlions - Dec 4, 2012 at 4:36 PM

I love the current direction of the Cardinals organization….but I gotta admit, I am a little jealous of the steam the Nats are gaining….looks like it’ll be a fun team to follow for quite some time.

      • natstowngreg - Dec 4, 2012 at 5:01 PM

Indeed. We Nats fans are still enjoying last season’s unexpected rise (though not the abrupt end). At the same time, we have not yet developed the sense of entitlement of fans of certain other teams’ fans. Oh, like Yankees and Phillies fans, just to pick a couple of fan bases toitally at random. The Nats are too young and fresh for that. The sense of entitlement (given that Washington is one of the world’s most self-important markets) will come later.

      • paperlions - Dec 4, 2012 at 5:02 PM

It’s good to have a plan.

      • DelawarePhilliesFan - Dec 4, 2012 at 9:29 PM

” we have not yet developed the sense of entitlement of fans of certain other teams’ fans.”

I think there is far more “sense of entitlement” with Nats fans then you realize.

As for the comment itself, I don’t think it is that big a deal, but I wold not have said it publically. Say it in the clubhouse, but don’t provide bulletin board material, or added pressure when the inevitable swoons occur

      • natstowngreg - Dec 5, 2012 at 4:26 PM

You’re really underrating the Washington fan base’s capacity for arrogance, self-importance and self-entitlement. I’ve seen it in my 30+ years living here (as part of the non-self-important population) — when the Redskins were champions. Keep in mind that this a fan base from the politicians, the pundits, the lobbyists, the bureaucrats whose titles are more impressive than their actual importance.

Right now, the Nats are the new big thing. Fans are still processing the idea that they have a contending team. It will take more time (and more playoff appearances). I can see it happening next season, maybe the season after.

  10. goskinsvt - Dec 4, 2012 at 4:15 PM

do none of you know that Davey said he’s going to retire after this year? obviously is WS or bust for him

    • paperlions - Dec 4, 2012 at 4:31 PM

These are pretty boring stories…we are mostly entertaining ourselves, sorry.

    • natstowngreg - Dec 4, 2012 at 4:35 PM

Yes, we know Davey plans to retire. It was in all the papers (not to mention this here blog right here). Davey is saying “World Series or Bust” for the entire team, not just himself.

      • cur68 - Dec 4, 2012 at 4:51 PM

But who’s bust? That’s what I want to know. There’s some legendary busts out there, y’know. Might be worth it over a WS.

      • natstowngreg - Dec 4, 2012 at 5:04 PM

Not sure I know where you’re going with that comment. Not sure I want to know.

      • paperlions - Dec 4, 2012 at 5:51 PM

Cur’s a boob, just ignore him.

      • cur68 - Dec 4, 2012 at 6:17 PM

        That’s “boobz”.

  11. brazcubas - Dec 4, 2012 at 5:11 PM

So wait, Davey gets a statue if they don’t make it to the World Series? That doesn’t seem like the best way to motivate a team . . .

  12. fanofevilempire - Dec 4, 2012 at 7:46 PM

Davey is a great leader, he has won at every stop.
He worked for mad woman Marge Schott and
Madman Colangelo. He will never get in the way of his players, remember
how crazy the Mets were, he let them fight each other.

    • stex52 - Dec 5, 2012 at 9:25 AM

Wow, baseball haiku. I love the sentence breaks. Keep it up.

  13. schmedley69 - Dec 4, 2012 at 8:42 PM

They already sell bust t-shirts at Nats Park. They say “Werth” on the back,
